'I'm about to break.' The thought echoed in his head as he watched his hair fall to the ground. Clenching his teeth he held back the tears threatening to destroy any dignity he had. Coal wanted this moment to be over. To be back home with his friends kicking off the summer with an all night gaming binge. He wanted to drown in mountain dew and kill zombies. Not this. Not hang with a bunch of hypocritical drunk rednecks.

The deed was done. The last of his black locks fell to the ground. His father released him, and used his now free hands to feel the velvet fuzz on top of his bear hand.

Very suddenly, in a rage he didn't know he had, he turned fast grabbing the back if his chair swinging it with strength he didn't know he had slamming it against his father.

Jose said something in Spanish and jumped back, along with Chance and the other men. His father, taken off guard by the event, leaned against the bar where he had caught himself from falling staring his son in the eyes. He smiled a grin mixed with smug humor and something he couldn't quit place.

Coal looked at him waiting in fear from the realization he had just hit his father. Surely he was about to get his ass kicked. And Brent's beating would be child's play compared to what his father could do.

But an ass kicking didn't happen and the tension in the bar was suddenly expelled by Chance handing his father a twenty.

"Told you my son had a pair." Was all his father said as he put the money in his pocket. Chance grumbled something about teenage hormones and luck.

Coal stared dumb struck as his father walked over to him and patted his back.

"Next time, you might wanna swing harder, and aim for the head. That little outburst would of gotten you killed in a real bar fight." His dad laughed.

Coal regained his wit, "you bet for me?"

"And thank got you pulled through! I only had a five on me so you would of had to spot me." His father winked.

He frowned at the old man and looked at his hair on the floor. Then back at the other men in the bar. If he could pull through this, if he could survive this summer of hell, he would be able to stand up to Brent, and change the way people viewed him. Most of all... He might have a chance with her.
