The session ran through the night at an awkward stumbling pace. Coal tried hard to sing the songs and the band tried to get him to follow the same beat that had accompanied who ever this Trev, kid's voice was. It wasn't working. The notes were every where and he wondered if Trev even actually sung.
"Alright, alright, alright. Stop guys. This isn't working." The girl who's name had been a number of things in the past hour including babe, trouble, dipstick, drums, and trix, stood up from the drum set and started walking to the door.
Donny grabbed her arm and gave her a look that was somewhere in between sympathetic and annoyed. She glanced down at his hand unconcerned, then rolled her eyes and through her self into the nearly broken office chair.
"This isn't going to work. His voice is nothing like Trev's." She looked away a brim of what could be tears thick on her voice.
"If it isn't crossing the line for me to ask this, who is Trev?" Coals voice cracked from over use.
Jose looked at Donny then at the girl. Alex turned around swinging his arms up behind his head like a runner who couldn't breath.
"Trever was our lead vocalist obviously, but the reason why your here and not him is because two weeks ago he started acting like a little dick because Hazzel- ".
"That's enough Donny." Hazzel's eyes were now bloodshot and brimming with tears. She had pulled her legs up to her chest making her look small and breakable. Her ferocious demeanor vanishing like a bad magic trick.
Coal mumbled something that sounded like sorry. His eyes found his feet like they always do in uncomfortable situations.
"There is nothing to be done. Shit happened we're all pissed and he's gone. Coal your here, and your voice is great. We'll make this work gringo." Jose half smiled.
Coal nodded his head. "I'll stay... In the band if you'll let me."
Alex walked up to him and for the first time that night spoke. "Dude no offense but your stuck with us now." His goofy smile lit up blue eyes. "Hey we should shut it down for the night and hit it up early tomorrow. It's 1:00 in the morning and mom wanted us home before breakfast."
"Aye shit gringo." Jose pulled out his phone to check to make sure he was right.
Donny laughed and started for the door. "I'll see you all later."
Hazzel jumped up and smacked Alex in the back of the head, "thanks a lot dip shit why didn't you tell me it was that late?" She grabbed a black book bag with a rainbow strap. But before she started heading out she flashed Coal a smile. "See ya later Coal, and by the way, you should let that black hair of yours grow out." She finished the sentence with a wink and was gone into the now humid night before Coal could react.
He had forgot. His hair had been gone for so long now he had stopped missing it. He ran a hand over the top of his head and felt the soft new fuzz. A little bit of anger lodged itself in between feelings of goofy giddiness and uncomfortable attraction, and he felt his face heat up.
"Coal!" He looked up at Alex who was zipping his guitar into its case. "Listen my sister can be a bit of a whore so watch out." With little effort he stood and placed the guitar over his shoulder. "And look man, she doesn't want any one else to know, but if your going to be apart of this...well... the reason why Trever isn't in the band..." He glanced at the door then at Jose, and back to Coal. His face got serious, "..is because he took more from my sister then she was willing to offer."
Coal furrowed his eye brows confused and then the realization of what Alex meant hit hard. Trever had slept with Hazzel, with out her consent. Realizing this he opened his mouth to deny any intentions of being with Hazzel, but Alex was already out the door. Flustered he ran a hand over his head and turned around.
"Gringo," Jose spoke bringing Coal out of his own personal rant. "I'll take you home." He nodded his head towards the door, a set of keys in his hand.
