Coal stood behind a grey wood register looking over a magazine of old muscle cars. He had found out that his was a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, and the glossy picture before him was one painted baby blue. It's been 6 weeks since he's gotten the car and a lot has changed. Thoughts of going back to see his friends have all but faded, replaced by an erg to get stronger. 5 weeks remaining. 5 weeks till Brent gets what he deserves.
With practice Coal had mastered the Manuel, giving him free reign of the hills of the south. This also gave him a means to collect a new wardrobe of black on black denim and cotton. His hair, now an inch longer stood in every which way, giving him an almost electrocuted look. One that he finds suits him very well. The sessions with the band also got easier as his voice began to match their music and vise versa. There first gig, a hit. There second, a blow out. But the third.
The third they rocked the house.
He's also gotten taller. Maybe by only an inch or two, but just enough to give him hight over Hazzel. Training with his dad every morning and night has gotten easier too. The pain that use to make him want to give up, now made him push harder. The ache of sore muscles were now a pleasure to strive for. The blisters on his hands which stung for what felt like months, were now calluses.
Each of his new friends have opened Coal up a little at a time. He found him self doing things he'd normally say no to giving him a life he thought he could never have. Where his friends back home had been so similar, each one of these guys have been completely different. Like each represented a different instrument in the band and together they made powerful songs.
Jose is definitely the leader. With out him, there would be no practice, no gigs, and definitely no band. He's the only responsible member and the only one who keeps the band at peace. Coal is pretty sure none of the members would be friends if it wasn't for him.
Donny is still a bit of a mystery. He doesn't talk much, but when he does it's generally to express his concern for the amount of stupidity the other members had racked up. He's the oldest in the group at 21.
Alex is the loudest. Besides the guitar he also does scream vocals. Which kills Coal because he still can't make his voice do it. Alex is Hazzel's brother. Well half brother, Alex's dad is the man currently married to their mom. Hazzel's dad, as far as Alex puts it, was a biker passing by the dinner where their mom works. After a bit of a bang he left and never came back. Of course Alex's dad was furious, especially since they had already been together for three years and had Alex, who's 18 now.
Hazzel's the youngest. She's 15 but her birthday is near the end of December making Coal three months older. She's also the hardest one in the group to read. Sometimes she's sweet and doting, hugging all the members, asking if they're ok. Other times she's a time bomb just waiting for someone to say the wrong thing so she can let them have it. Also with her being the only girl in the group she gets away with a lot. Her smile and laugh getting out of almost any bad situation.
Coal started working at the feed store, to earn some extra cash. He had asked his dad if he could repaint his car, but his dad had said if he paid for it he could do any thing he wanted to his car.
So every day from 8 till 3 he loads and unloads trucks of feed and tack, stocks shelves, feed animals, and fixes loose boards. Earning him a good 10.25 an hour.
At 2:15 the bell to the door rang out, announcing the arrival of a young temptress with rainbow hair, dressed in white and denim.
Coal looked up his confusion off set the redness that creeped up to his face. Her spaghetti strap tank showed off her shoulders and neck line which were bare except for a ring on a chain around her neck. One she always wore. Her jeans were a dark denim with tears and frays riddled into the fabric. They were tight showing off her premature hips that where far too curved for a fifteen year old.
