Sunlight streamed through the small crack in between the dark purple curtains that covered the majority of Mackenzie Matthews' window. And while the curtains were meant to keep the irritating sun out, a ray still shone directly on Mackenzie's eyes, causing a her eyes to flutter and a sound of annoyance to come from her.

As the brunette 9 year old sat up in her twin-sized bed, she pushed away strands of her long hair from her face. She yawned tiredly before catching sight of her reflection in the full-length mirror that resided across from her bed. She sighed when she saw the purple bags underneath her hazel eyes.

"I need to start getting more sleep." Mackenzie muttered to herself before proceeding to climb out of bed and rushing to the bathroom, towel in hand. Just as she was about to push open the door, Riley appeared out of nowhere and grabbed the door handle. Mackenzie stared at her elder sister wide-eyed, surprised by the fact that the older brunette had moved so quickly.

"Oh, sorry Mackenzie, I didn't see you there. You don't mind right?" Riley smiled softly down at her. Even though Mackenzie was irritated to no end, she kept her facial expression neutral and just shook her head.

"Go ahead." She replied in a soft tone. Riley gave her one more smile before shutting the door and locking it, leaving Mackenzie no other choice but to lean against the wall and wait for the bathroom to be free again. Auggie walked up to her, leaning against the wall beside her.

"Riley take the bathroom first again?" He asked, staring up at Mackenzie.

"Yup." She replied monotonously. Auggie nodded his head in understanding.

"So I'm guessing me asking to go second is out of the question?"

Mackenzie turned her head towards him and squinted her eyes at him in a warning glare. Auggie glanced at her expression before turning back towards the wall across from them.

"I'm gonna take that as a no."

Breakfast at the Matthews household was the same every morning. Topanga and Cory, Mackenzie's parents, were always the first ones in the kitchen. Maya, Riley's best friend since they were little kids, always joined them for breakfast despite her insisting that she wasn't hungry. Mackenzie walked into the kitchen, just as Topanga was placing Riley and Maya's bowls of oatmeal in front of them.

"Mackenzie, honey there's oatmeal for you on the counter." Topanga told her as she took her seat at the table. Mackenzie sighed, watching from the corner of her eye as her father asked Riley how she feeling about her first day of middle school.

Today's my first day of fifth grade. Why doesn't anybody ask how I feel?

Mackenzie grabbed her bowl of oatmeal and sat down at the end of the table, giving her baby brother a small smile which he returned. As Mackenzie ate her oatmeal and listened distantly to Cory and Topanga provide her sister with advice, she couldn't help but let her mind wander. She daydreamed about how different her life would have been had she been given as much attention as Riley received daily.

She was snapped out of her thoughts when she realized that Riley and Maya were getting up and rushing out of the Matthews' apartment.

"Okay Auggie and Mackenzie, time for us to go as well or else we'll be late." Topanga stated as she grabbed all of their bowls and put them in the sink. Mackenzie nodded and got up from her chair, watching as Auggie ran over to the couch with his gray shoes in hand.

"Kenzie! Can you help me with my shoes please?" He asked as he stared up at her. Mackenzie gave him a fond smile as she nodded.

"Of course monkey." She quickly headed over to him and put his shoes on his feet before tying them for him.

"Go get your backpack okay?" Once he nodded, he ran off to his room while Mackenzie left to hers. About 10 minutes later, everyone was ready to go apart from Cory who had left a while ago. Mackenzie was the last one to leave and she sighed for what felt like the 100th time that morning as she followed after her mother and brother towards her first day of fifth grade.
