Mackenzie hopped out of her mother's car with Auggie in tow, helping him put his backpack on his shoulders. Topanga watched them with a smile from the driver's seat, waving slightly.

"Have a good day you two!" She yelled softly before Mackenzie closed the backdoor and led Auggie towards their school building.

"Bye, mommy!" He yelled as he let Mackenzie pull him away. Once they were inside of the building she started leading him to where his classroom was. Mackenzie sighed as she kept Auggie close to her, making sure none of the older kids bumped into him. Once they arrived at his classroom door, she crouched down and gave him a small smile.

  "Have a good day, Auggie."

"You too, Kenzie." Auggie kissed her cheek before skipping into the room. Mackenzie watched him go with a smile before rushing off to her own classroom.

Mackenzie greeted her teacher before taking a seat in the middle of the classroom, something she's done since the third grade. She began taking her notebook and pencils out right as a girl with honey blonde hair and light green eyes sat down in the seat next to her.

"Hi!" She greeted with a bright smile. Mackenzie jumped and looked around before pointing to herself.

"A-are you talking to me?" She questioned timidly. The girl giggled as she took her supplies out of her bag much like Mackenzie did earlier.

"Of course silly. We're the only ones here! Nice to meet you, I'm Lani and I just transferred here from Texas!" The girl, Lani, stuck her hand out to Mackenzie while keeping that same contagious smile on her face. Mackenzie couldn't help but return it as she shook her hand gently.

"Nice to meet you too Lani, I'm Mackenzie." The two girls pulled their hands away once more students started entering the classroom. The bell signifying the beginning of class rang out causing the teacher to clap her hands and begin the lesson. Mackenzie smiled to herself as she wrote down her notes, having a good feeling about the new girl.

Lunch time had finally rolled around and Lani insisted that she and Mackenzie walk to the cafeteria together, partly because Lani didn't know where the cafeteria was but also because she wanted to get to know Mackenzie better. The brunette had no objections to this which is why they're both now standing in the cafeteria line, allowing the lunch lady to put food on their trays.

"Okay where should we sit?" Lani questioned, turning towards Mackenzie. Mackenzie glanced around the cafeteria before pointing over at a table in the corner of the room.

  "How about over there?"

Lani scrunched her nose as she looked over at where her brunette friend was pointing to.

"By the trash can? Nope we're gonna sit right here!" Lani placed her tray down on the table in the dead center of the lunch room, before she grabbed Mackenzie's tray and set it down on the table as well. Mackenzie stared at her with wide eyes.

"B-but this where the Fern Five sit."

"The Fern Five? Who the heck is that?" Lani stared up at Mackenzie with scrunched eyebrows.

"That would be us." A voice spoke up from behind Mackenzie, causing both girls to turn to the source. Standing before them was a group of 5 kids that they recognized from their class. A girl with long dark brown hair and a bright pink streak going through it stood at the front of the group and she was clearly the one who spoke.

"You must be the new girl, Lani is it?" She asked as she eyed them up and down obnoxiously. Lani merely raised an eyebrow at her before nodding.

"That's me. Can we help you?" Mackenzie fiddled with the bracelets on her wrist nervously. She hated confrontation, but Lani seemed as confident as ever, a glare set in her eyes.

"You're sitting at our table." A girl with blonde hair and a purple streak that matched the one in the first girl's hair spoke up. Lani rolled her eyes as she crossed her arms.

"I don't see your names on it. Besides we were here first, so you can get a move on." Lani smiled sweetly at them before sitting back down, Mackenzie following her lead. The first girl scoffed as she squinted her eyes at them.

"W-Whatever! Let's go." She walked away, the four others trailing behind her, but not before shooting Lani and Mackenzie a dirty look. Except for one, a boy at the very back of the group. Once they left, Mackenzie turned towards Lani with an impressed expression on her face.

"I can't believe you actually just stood up to Fern."

"Is that her name? Who are they anyway?" Lani asked as she began shoving food into her mouth.

"They're the coolest kids in the fifth grade! At least that's what everybody thinks." Mackenzie replied, eating her mashed potatoes happily. Lani stared over at the group, which was seated at a table in the corner.

"One of them's staring at ya." Lani told Mackenzie. This caused her to peer over her shoulder, seeing the boy that didn't glare at them before, watching her now. She blushed a bright pink as they made eye contact before she turned back around quickly. Lani smirked as she took a sip of her juice.

  "You're blushing!"

"Am not!" Mackenzie objected, quickly shoving more food into her mouth.

"Are too! Who is he? Do you have a crush on him?" Lani fired questions at her causing Mackenzie's eyes to grow wide and quickly shush her friend. Once Lani had calmed down, Mackenzie began responding quietly so that no one sitting in the tables around them would be able to hear her words.

"H-his name is Angel and may-maybe I do."

  This caused Lani to giggle.

"Why so shy about it? He's cute and I promise I won't tell anybody!" She held her pinky finger out to Mackenzie. As the young Matthews girl peered up at her new friend, she could see the sincerity in her eyes. She gave the honey-blonde a small smile before linking their pinkies together.

No today wasn't bad, not at all.
