Author note: In my literature today we read this essay by Jeffrey Cohen "Monster Culture (Seven Thesis)" is all about how monsters are used in literature and connect to the real world. And there were these two lines at the end of his sixth thesis that said "Do monsters really exist? Surely they must, for if they did not, how could we?" and that was something that I really like. I have seen it else where but I liked the wording.
I grew up thinking knowing
That the thing in my closet was not real
That the sound against my window was the wind
I grew up thinking that monsters are not real
That the only monster was in books and on screens
That the only blood spilled was that by accident
I grew up and saw the truth
That the real monsters are us
That we are what causes the blood and tears spilled
I grew up more and saw
That we are not just the monsters
That we are also the heroes
