Shutting the engine off, I just took a deep breath and sank back in my seat. One year. That is how long its been since I’ve been in the city of Boston, and the first time in my entire life I’m here as a visitor.
“Helloooo!!!”
Knocking on my window caused my eyes to burst open. Looking to my left I saw the knocker was Brianna. Smiling I opened the door and was pulled into a hug by my best friend.
“It is so good to see you!” She whispered as she hugged me tighter.
“It’s good to see you too Bree, but please let go of me, you’re attracting stares.”
“Sorry.” She released her grip from me and gave me an odd look, “Why on Earth are you wearing sunglasses?”
“Because god forbid people realize that I’m back in Boston. Do you know what kind of an upstir that would cause?”
“Oh yeah, I keep forgetting that you play for the Habs. The one team I and all of Boston never expected you to go to.”
I rolled my eyes and walked towards my trunk, “I know Bree and I’ve heard that line over a million times.”
Brianna huffed and walked next to me, “Look I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you.”
“You didn’t.” After receiving the gift bag and my suitcase I shut the trunk. “Now what time is this party going to be?”
“Noon.” She stated as she grabbed my suitcase from me and headed towards her apartment building. I followed behind her. “The party will be in the apartment and around a dozen people are going to come.”
I nodded and entered the elevator, “You must be excited for all the presents.”
“Obviously.”
I laughed and we exited the elevator on the twentieth floor. Walking down the hall, I stopped once we reached her apartment. As she unlocked the door, she had one foot inside before someone forced the door from opening any further, looking up I saw that it was her sister, Kasey, keeping us from proceeding.
“I thought I told you to knock first.” Kasey stated.
Bree let out a growl, “It’s my apartment.”
“And I am still decorating.”
“Whatever, besides Lauren is here and I need to bring her stuff in.”
Kasey gazed over to finally acknowledge me. She gave me a warm smile, “Lau! Man I would hug you but if I move then Brianna will see the decorations.”
“No worries.”
“Don’t worry I’ll hug you later and….” She grabbed my suitcase and the gift bag from me, “I will take these to your room.”
“What the heck am I supposed to do if you won’t let me into my own apartment?”
“Go for a walk and catch up with each other.” With that she slammed the door shut.
I laughed and looked over at Bree, “Come on let’s take a stroll.”
Hooking our arms together, we ventured back into the chilly streets of Boston. The clouds scuttled throughout the sky as the sun tried to fight its way through; leaves fell from the trees and added disheveled beauty of scarlet and gold to the ground below. Making it known that it was the start of fall for New England.
“Taking in the sights I see.” Bree pointed out as she handed me my coffee, before we headed towards Boston Common.
“Yeah. Just trying to remember what autumn feels like in this city.”
