Carol Danvers was an Air Force And Nasa officer that was assigned to find Captain Mar-Vell and become involved with him. Their DNA mixed in an explosion which gave her powers like him. She joined the Avengers after getting her powers and went by Ms. Marvel. Eventually, she switched her name to Captain Marvel in honor of Captain Mar-Vell.
