"Ring, Ring!"
"The first toll of the school bell this year."

It was the first day of my grade 11 year. I was just walking up the main stairs of the high school's entrance. Eledore the high school was situated in a small town Weyburn. Weyburn had warm climate conditions and the air was always humid. The beautiful weather helped grow the school's pristine gardens. The school grounds wrapped around the high school, and bordered the outside walls. They were well groomed and maintained. Lush green grass grew from the rich dark soil. There were white and red rose bushes on the far right and left side which represented the school's colors. Their purpose was to be decorative pieces that divided the landscape for the students privacy. Marble tables to work at adorned the stone walkways next to the rose bushes. To my left was an outdoor pool for the swim team to practice in. And to my right was my personal favorite part of the grounds, the gazebo. Last year, I sat there all the time while I thought and studied.

In the center of it all was the school. It stood three stories tall, all beige stone with many large tinted windows. It was older, so there were many pillars that held the top two stories, which created a roofed pathway around most of the school. The main entrance had an elegant fountain with two cobblestone paths around either side that lead to a short staircase. At the end of the stairs was a small path, and then the main doors. They were dark, engraved mahogany wood surrounded by a stone archway.

Just as I was stepping up the third step, my best and only friend Marie ran up to me. "Hey, Becca! How was your summer?" Marie and I are almost complete opposites. She was outgoing and strong, while I am more timid and shy. Her hair today was a sea blue gradually changing to a cool turquoise color, twisted into tight ringlets. Her face was small and bird like. She had a long pointed nose, and had fairly small lips. Her eyes were big and brown. She was tall and wiry, as well as very athletic.
"Ya, it was pretty good, the same old, family vacation and sports. What about you?" Marie's face was easy to read and I could tell she had a story to share.

"Well,-" The second bell of the morning just rang at 8:45am, cutting her off mid-sentence.

"Sorry, I got to get to class! I can't be late the first day," I yelled to her as I jogged off into the school to catch class.
It was highly important for me to always be on time because I needed to have near perfect grades and a perfect attendance record if I was going to make it to Oxford. It's always been one of my life goals.

I was just stepping into my English A.P. class when a boy from behind came running down the hall. He ran into me and knocked me over, scattering my notebooks. He had fallen too and when I looked up to see who it was, it was Brad White. I could feel the warmth of blush on my face. He was probably one of the most popular kids in school. He had a dirty blond hair that was swept off to the right in a smooth motion. He had a strong build and was tall. Today he wore a button up plaid shirt with jeans that I thought were pretty flattering. His eyes were often talked about between the 'wannabe' girlfriends. They were a rich sea blue, with gold tinges.

"I'm so sorry Rebecca. I didn't want to be late for class," he apologized. I was actually surprised he said that. Not the sorry part, but worrying about being late. He was a typical jock, yet he was extremely smart, but he always tried to hide it and I've never known why.

"No don't worry about it. It was just an accident, no real harm done," I told him as we both gathered my books. I stood up and he handed me my books. I looked at his face and thought that he was blushing. I quickly brushed the thought away. I was a nobody, who was shy and timid. He was so up there and popular. He couldn't have been blushing.

"Here you go. Sorry, I got to run," then he was gone, running down the hallway again. I watched him go for a second then snapped back to attention and rushed into my classroom.

I stepped into the room, and went to take my seat at the top row of all the benches. I checked my watch, only 8:57am, 3 minutes early and most importantly not late. The class was kind of like a lecture hall. Two thirds of the room were taken up by the seats, similar to bleachers. Wood benches, with an overhang for a table to write on. Rows were staggered, making steps down the middle, cutting the benches into two sections. There were large windows on the far wall, illuminating the room with bright light. The front half of the room was a path for students to walk to the door, and a stage with a large board for the teacher to write on. I always liked the farthest seat from the board the most. I could see the board easily when I had my glasses on. Also because it was tucked away so I didn't get much attention from anyone. Our teacher walked onto the stage and addressed the class.

"So today students, we will be having a 2000 word introductory essay to write. I'm not an easy going person so if your paper is late, it will not be marked. Have it into me by next week," he said. This is going to be a hard class, I thought. When the bell finally rang at 10:30 for a class switch I was so relived. I got up from my seat and walked down to the bottom of the class and out the door.

I stopped at my locker to grab my binder for math. I had just finished and closed the door and realized that four paces down was Brad. Why did I have to keep running into him? He started to walk towards me, but I was so nervous with everyone around that I stepped away from him even though the math classroom was the other way. I couldn't walk past him, so I just waved, smiled and rushed away so that I wasn't late for math either.

The math was easy. The hard part was staying focused. I walked the hall headed towards the cafeteria for lunch, going over in my brain what had happened in between all of my classes. While I was switching classes, when I was at my locker I noticed him staring at me occasionally. When I saw him in the corner of my eye, I could see the deep thought in his eyes. I also saw confusion and I had absolutely no idea what was going on in that head of his.

"Hey," said a voice I could always recognize, bringing me back to attention.

"Hey Marie, how were your first classes?" I asked her while waiting in line for food.

"Oh, great my science class was..." I dazed off completely unaware of what she was saying. Instead I noticed Brad and the rest of his jock friends strut into the lunchroom. I looked away but I was completely aware of them.

"Rebecca!" Marie was almost yelling at me now. "Hey, are you ok?" Marie is always concerned.

"Ya, I'll be fine."

The rest of the day was just a blur, I had no more awkward encounters with Brad and all of classes gave me lots of homework to do. I live pretty close to the school so I decided to walk home today rather than take the bus. It was about 3:00pm when I left the school. The last thing I remember was walking and then I tripped on a bump in the sidewalk and fell.
