Everything leading up to tomorrow was bland, but I could feel a feeling tugging at me the whole time. The whole adoption thing was certainly a drag down. The whole day at school was flying by, and when lunch came I was walking over to the gazebo, to see that Brad was already standing there waiting. My steps seemed to quicken a little bit, shuffling. I was dragging my feet, when I tripped over an uneven stone on the pathway, I was falling when Brad caught me. I looked at him in shock and disbelief.
"Thanks, but how did you get here so fast? You were just over 7 feet away, and you facing the other way," I ask puzzled. He looked at me in a way I couldn't even describe.
"No, I don't think so, I was walking toward you when you fell so I rushed forward," he tried to convince me.
"No-" I started to say but he cut me off,
"do you think we could just get to work rather than talk about how I caught you?" He put on a forced smile and just walked me over to the gazebo.
We edited his work and it was very awkward. I would try to hide when I was blushing because I didn't want him to see me like that.
"So I hear your birthday is coming up," he politely commented. I looked at him quizzically.
"Ya, it's in two weeks, on the 23," I respond. He just nodded his head and got back to work. After 10 minutes passed he brought the topic back.
"So you're going to be turning 17," Brad asked. I nodded my head while barely glancing up. He had a weird expression on his face.
"Hey, are you ok? You have looked pretty strange for the past few days, at least I think you have, but I don't know you very well," I asked him. His face fell.
"Don't you know yet? I'm surprised you haven't figured it out yet or has no one told you?" I looked at him in complete confusion. I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about.
"Well it appears no one has told you. Well I will tell you this. You aren't normal, and it is because of your parents." I looked right into his eyes. They were different now than what I remembered. I could see a dark purple seeping outward into the iris coming from the pupil, consuming the sea blue color. I tried to pass it by, but I just stared. That is not normal.
"What do you mean? My parents," I ask. He looked disappointed and annoyed.
"Not your adopted parents-" a wave of shock spread across my face, and I had no idea how he knew.
"-Your biological parents. They aren't human. The Law restricts me from telling you but I hope you can figure it out yourself," he said. I gazed into his eyes, to see that they were blue again. He got up and gathered his books and started walking away.
"And two more things. Remember how sore your shoulder blades were the other day? There's a hint. Also try not to fall anymore, I don't want to have to catch you again. Goodbye," he said as he strutted away. I watched him walk, he was much more confident than usual.
