Chapter 15: Emma's POV
Luke had just picked me up from Maggie's home. I left immediately once I was finished with my "chores". Today was Thursday meaning volunteer day at the animal shelter. I had no clue what I was to do there. Luke had pulled up to a white house building. There was a sign in the corner reading
"Herman's Humane Society" along with a cartoon cat and cartoon dog on the side. Once we stepped out of his car, we headed towards inside the building.
I looked up at him. "Do you think I can pull this off?"
"As long as you're speaking in an American accent, sure. But Maggie never wears makeup by the way."
I blushed. Usually boys don't really notice if a girl is wearing makeup but I guess my case was totally different.
"Well I can't leave without it on." Maybe that was a bad statement.
"You look exactly like Maggie. Maggie always looks good without no makeup. Therefore I'm telling you--"
"I know, I know! I look good without makeup but seriously with some bronze, eyeshadow, and mascara, you look and feel so much more better. It even makes my eyes stand out". Luke bent over looking at me straight in the eyes as I batted my eye lashes. He chuckled,
"You aren't Maggie that's for sure but you are a goobert like her." What's a goobert? Is that an offensive word? It must be especially if Maggie is one.
We were in the house. I was greeted by a few ladies that I had no idea who they were. Luke had us stop by at the front desk checking us both in.
"So like what am I supposed to do?" I asked.
"Well it all depends. The manager, Sylvia will let you know once she's come out of her office. She's on a busy phone call right now."
We handed our paper work back to the lady at the front desk. She smiled at us both but especially me,
"I like your makeup, Maggie. " I smiled thanking her. I looked at her name tag on the side of her shirt. Her name was Lowes. Lowes had curled black hair.
"I like you hair, Lowes" I hope I pronounced that correctly.
She smiled thanking me in return. I hope this volunteer thing doesn't take too long. Just then a lady came out. I was assuming it was Sylvia not only because I am great at predicting but also because of her name tag.
"Hey Maggers and Luke", she greeted us warmly.
"Hey", said Luke back. I smiled giving a simple, "hello". The lady had dark, curly hair, and was taller than me but about the same height as Luke.
"Is that makeup? Will someone pinch me. I have never seen you with makeup on Maggers". Okay so Luke was right. Everyone noticed the makeup. It wasn't like I was a clown with sooo much on.
"There must be a boy you like", Sylvia said giving me a smile. She had a southern accent. Just by the way she spoked.
"Oh no I just want to make my appearance more cleaner". With that I finished my last word eyeballing Luke. He just shrugged.
"Well I have your guys' tasks today. Ya'll tasks are quite similar. Luke you are in charge of making sure each cat is brushed and groomed with Carrie. She is already in there getting started. While you Maggie get to give the dogs in annex C all baths. Kevin over there will be helping you." She pointed towards some guy in the corner with dark hair, dark skin. and glasses. He looked up towards me giving me a little wave. I could tell that he was definitely shy. I was so not excited. Giving dogs baths? Ew!!! Dogs always smelt bad and had bad breath. Once Sylvia dismissed us, I walked towards Kevin. Luke had wished me a "good luck" as he stepped in a glass room full of cats.
