The cool autumn night was speckled with ivory gems. An owl hooted its nightly call. Not a single deer stirred within the forest floor. None but one.
Laiya, a young doe, covered with white speckles, decided to take a midnight stroll. She searched the cool ground for a bite to eat, but lucked out. There was a forest fire not too long ago, and it nearly wiped out the forest and its inhabitants. Ever since, food had been scarce. Laiya ignored her growling stomach and treded on, trying to locate something in the dark. Burnt leaves crunched with every step she took. Finally, she found what she was looking for. A pond, illuminated by moonlight, in a clearing.
Laiya's eyes lit up when she saw it. Not only was there fresh water, but moss too! Moss was the only food availible, and pond moss was the juciest. Without hesitation, she charged down the grassy hill at full speed, her tongue hanging out. At the bottom on the hill, she skidded to a halt to see two other deer having a midnight snack. The first one was another doe, her spots almost completely disappeared, named Gabby. Her sweet and quirky personality made her very likable. She was friends with almost every deer in the forest. The other deer was a buck, who's horns were only nubs at this point, named Alan. He sometimes acted cooler than he actually was, but once you got to know him, he wasn't that bad. Both deer looked up when they heard Laiya's noisy arrival.
"Oh hi, Laiya!" Gabby said with a smile.
"Hullo" Alan added. Both deer looked like they were starving, just like Laiya.
"Want something to eat? The moss is amazing" Gabby told Laiya, Laiya nodded and dipped her snout into the water. She lapped the water rapidly while the others continued there drink. While enjoying her drink, Laiya found a patch of moss. She dipped her snout further to reach the succulent moss, and devoured it in almost no time. All three deer lost themselves in the moonlit pond. The sun started to creep over the horizon as everyone finished up. Licking their lips, Laiya, Gabby, and Alan headed back to the Antler clearing. (More to come soon!)
