"You're absolutely sure about this?" Nicole asked for the third time as they neared the middle of the forest. Both Oak and Laiya decided just to ignore Nicole instead of wasting the breath. The path had been very calm and quiet apart from the questioning and a few bird calls. Laiya looked at her hooves as she walked, counting off the dead flora as she passed it. Burnt leaves... crumbled twigs... crushed flowers... clovers?!
Laiya eagerly called her friends over. Their mouths gaped open at the sight of living clovers.
"We're getting close guys!" Laiya exclaimed. Seeing the little bursts of green gave the group new hope.
"I knew this would work out eventually" Nicole said. Giving her a quick glare, Laiya nodded to Oak to follow.
More and more life began to appear as the deer ran further into the forest. None of them had realized just how hungry they were until they saw the field of clovers before them. The three of them stood in the new field, in awe of what surrounded them.
"We have to tell the others right away" Oak whispered almost distantly.
"I don't know what y'all are waiting for, its time to chow down!" Nicole exclaimed, jumping into a particularly cushy pile of clovers. The other two deer followed suite, gulping down mouthfuls of clovers within seconds. In almost no time the deer were full with wide smiles on their face.
"Man, I wish our friends were here to see this" Laiya said dreamily. Nicole and Oak shot Laiya a glare, and immediately Laiya swallowed her words, along with another mouthful of clover.
"You know what, I think its about time we share the gift of this clover patch with our herd" Nicole decided, pretending like Laiya didn't just bring up their presumably dead friends. The other two deer nodded in agreement. Oak walked over to a nearby tree and ripped off a piece of bark. When Laiya and Nicole looked confused, she said "We're gonna rip it up and use it as a way to mark our path"
"Oohhh" they said in unison. Oak took off two more pieces of bark and handed them over to the others. Nicole took a small patch of clover and shoved it onto her piece of bark.
"Alright, everyone ready?" Laiya said as if talking to a large group of deer. She looked at her two friends, both smiling widely. Although it wasn't her original hunting crew, she couldn't be happier to not be alone on this journey.
"I'm glad we got here, guys." She said with a tear in her eye. "Time to share this gift with the world." With that, their small herd was off, ready to face the journey home.
