The sun began to lower itself down the horizon, giving way to the ebony night. The thumping of a chief's hoof meeting stone sounded through the forest. Thump. Thump. Thump.

In mere minutes, deers started crowding around the source of the noise; A large, muscular stag standing proudly on a large rock. Murmurs echoed from the crowd of deer, getting louder as more and more of them showed up. Suddenly, the tapping stopped, and all the deer turned their attention to the stag.

"Welcome to the moonlit gathering." He stated with a deep, booming voice. The crowd bowed their heads to the chief, showing their respect before he continued. After scanning the crowd, he gave a slight nod and everyone rose to their feet once more. The stag spoke again.

"You may all know that recently, a forest fire broke out, demolishing our food source." He announced, a hint of despair in his voice. A few deer shivered, the memory returning, while others whispered to one another. The chief stomped his hoof on the rock once more, and the crowd came to a hush.

"Luckily, there is still food left. Our very own Iris and Oak, two of our top-notch healers if I do say so myself, have found a solution to the food crisis."

Everyone turned their attention to two does wearing leaves behind their ears. Oak blushed sheepishly while Iris started to speak.

"Thats right! While searching for herbs, we spotted a place to the east with a bounty of clovers just waiting to be devoured!" Iris announced. The whole crowd seemed to light up, as more murmuring arose.

"We will be picking six deer to make the journey to scout out the territory tomorrow at sunhigh." Iris exclaimed. The crowd went silent. A journey?? No one wanted to be the unlucky ones to go on one. At every turn was another danger. The two healers' smiles disappeared. After a few minutes of silence, the chief spoke again.

"Is there any other news from the herd?" The Stag questioned.

"I heard the creek is wonderful for drinking this time of year, Chief Oak" Piped a doe from the back.

"Yea, it is! I went with Cyan the other day and the water was amazing!" Exclaimed Mush, who was sitting in the front with Nicole.

"Thats wonderful, Plano and Mush" Chief Oak responded. Before he could utter another word, a new sound filled the forest. The howl of a pack of wolves. Then, dead silence.
