"So you're saying we're the only ones left?!" Nicole uttered in disbelief. Laiya nodded, followed by an inhospitable silence that filled the forest clearing. A breeze broke through the barrier of shock, breaking the rest of Nicole's leaf scarf remains into dust.
"So, what now?" Oak asked, flicking her tail. Both Laiya and Nicole attempted to say something. Yet nothing came but more silence.
Finally, Nicole muttered the words that nobody wanted to hear. "We should probably just head home, our team's too small now anyway." Their tails drooped. The air grew heavy and tense. Even the soft breeze ceased. No one wanted to give up on this journey so quickly. But sadly, it was the only way. Without further adieu, the remaining deer began their trot home.
"Wait." Laiya demanded, determination in her tone. Oak and Nicole looked back in surprise, waiting for what Laiya had to say.
"We can't just give up like this! We've gotten ourselves this far. I don't know about you guys, but I'm not leaving." Laiya exclaimed, stomping her hoof on the ground. The other deer looked back in shock, then considered what to do.
"Well-" Oak broke off. Without notice, Laiya began to gallop into the forest. Oak quickly ran to meet her, stumbling with surprise, followed by Nicole.
"W-wait a minute, don't do something you'll regret heheheh" Nicole said quickly, as if Laiya was just about to scream "HEY WOLVES, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN." Laiya let out a snort, picking up her pace. Abruptly, Oak stopped.
"Stop." She commanded. Both Nicole and Laiya froze. "We'll go with you."
"What?! Nicole and Laiya asked in unison. Nicole look at Laiya, then at Oak, with an astonished face.
Hanging her head in defeat Nicole muttered a "Fine."
"Oh yay! Thank you thank you thank you!" Laiya cheered. "Let's go!"
And that, readers, was how three deer, still shaken from their encounter with rabid foam, became brave enough to continue looking for food for their tribe.
