Chapter One
I felt myself start to get worried as people started to come out crying from the stage. What had the boys said? What was so awful that made them feel the need to break down into their own insecurity and vulnerability?
Of course, I wouldn't know... My aunt wouldn't let me watch, she said that it would affect my performance if I got distracted. It didn't help with what song I was singing either. My friends literally gave me a three day heads up that they put my name in, little brats.
"Do you have your cup?" My aunt asked as my name came around.
"Yes!" I say for the third time and roll my eyes before being thrown onto the stage. Suddenly, the other reactions were making sense. My whole body tensed and my hands gripped the poor plastic cup that was being strangled in my grip.
As my aunt gave me thumbs up from behind the curtain, I started to fix my vest and adjust my fedora, "Uh hi," I say as they looked up.
I watched as Harry's feet slip off the table and hit the floor; biting my lip was the only way I could keep from laughing at his expression, "And your name?" Liam asked from the opposite side of the table.
"Phoenix Jackman." He nods and writes something down.
"When you're ready," Lou said sitting back in his chair and looking me over.
"Um... I'm just doing Cups because I was told on short notice that I was going to be auditioning..." I say feeling a blush form onto my cheeks.
"That's alright," Niall said sitting forward like he actually really wanted to hear it.
So, stupidly, I sat on the floor and put my cup in front of me. In this moment I could almost hear the people backstage talking about how stupid I was. Talking about how being unprepared was a sin in the performing arts, and they're right.
Taking in a deep breath and tucking my long chalked black and blue hair behind my many times pierced ear, I started to do the cup part. Keeping the beat steady as my hands shook was torture, and singing the old folk song embarrassed me to no end...
Biting my lip piercing, I stood as I finished. The boys were all just kinda looking at me. Was it that bad? I never truly liked performing... I did it for my mother... and now, there wasn't a real reason to do it anymore.
"Right," I shift awkwardly, "I'll just go cry with the others now..."
Well, at least now I didn't have to actually go through with it, "You have an amazing voice," Lou says looking me in the eye and I blush. I felt so stupid standing here after sitting on the floor.
"Thank you..." He was looking at me with an emotion I couldn't even figure.
"You have my vote." Lou says smiling and sitting back in his big chair.
"Mine too." Niall says smiling at me. Well, if I got two votes then I couldn't have been that horrible, right? I felt a smile form on my face.
"I dunno.." Liam says, "you weren't very prepared for today..." Harry popped him in the arm.
"Yeah, but she has an amazing voice, Liam! And that is what matters right now! Hey, Love, you got my vote." I let out a breath.
I had three votes, which meant, I'm moving on, "Well, I don't even have to say anything, but I still think you're amazing anyway." Zayn smiled down at me and I felt a laugh bubble from my lips.
"Thank you guys so much," I say smiling as I walk off the stage.
"Phoenix you did great!" My aunt said giving me a squeeze.
"Thanks," I manage to say.
The people in charge had explained that since we have 5 judges this year, things are going to be a little different. Like just now, in the audition, it had just been me and the judges with no audience. Or latter in the compition, we arn't going to be put into 4 groups we're going to be put into 5; Over 25's, Groups, Boys, Girls, and Teens. I was going to be put into Teens since I am 16, but I have no clue who my mentor is going to be. That is also something that's different, we make it right to the judges house after we get sorted due to letting less and less people into the X Factor. My aunt thinks it's rediculous that things have changed, but I think it's almost better.
"Would you look at that hair?" I turned and saw a blonde laughing with her friends, "Oh God! Look at those eyes, gray?! What a freak!" The girl could have been Blake Lively's sister, but her attitude was horrible..."And those earrings? Holy crap, maybe we should call her Nails, or Metal." I felt my heart clench. Did they look that bad? Sure my hair was long and black with blue chalk in the front and that's kinda weird but my ears weren't that messed up. I had five piercings in each, but it had been my mom's idea.
She said, "It's always important to be different in your own way."
"Nails, Metal? Really?" I asked before standing and walking over to the doors as a woman said the the boys were ready to see all of us again.
Casually, I walked out onto the stage with the rest of the people who had made it on, which wasn't that many. Only about 50, "Hello." the boys say as we walk back onto the stage.
My guess is that all of this is on live television, great. I looked stupid with my black ripped skinny jeans, and purple plaid shirt and fedora. Why did I let my aunt choose my wardrobe? Don't ask, because I have no fuckin clue. Turning my head to look backstage I saw she was already flirting with the stage manager, great, "Hey Nails, maybe you should pay attention." I turned to see the blonde giving me a look.
"What?" I asked giving her a look right back.
"I called your name a few minutes ago, multiple times..." Harry says with a small smile on his face. Blushing, I walked over to Harry and the blonde girl.
Had I zoned out? Jesus Christ, I need to pull it together...
"Don't worry," someone breathed in my ear, "everyone gets nervous." I smiled at Louis before looking straight ahead until the whole thing was over. So, I was right, I had been put into the Teens group, which only makes perfect sense. But, I definitely did not want to be in Harry's house.
