IMPORTANT: In the previous chapter I said Iris was eighteen, when really she's suppose to still be seventeen! Sorry guys! Short Chapter! ):
Chapter Fourteen
We were having a barbecue for Soccer. Basically, every year, the whole team got together and we just spent a day with each other. My freshmen year, Davis did it so we could all get to know each other and get closer. We pretty much already all knew each other, but there were a couple freshmen on the team still, and these days always ended up being fun.
Last year, we had a pasta dinner and everyone gathered up at Maggie's house for it. We all brought some type of food to share with everyone. I swear I gained like twenty pounds that night. It was probably my favorite year. So much things unraveled that night. Maggie had these two dogs and they ran down the stairs, and one of the senior's on the team, freaked out and got on a chair. I couldn't stop laughing because standing on a chair was not going to do anything. I guess she realized that too because she ran onto Maggie's patio and closed the glass door while the dogs stared at her. I was literally on the floor choking on my own laughter, and everyone else was laughing too, even Davis and Olly.
I remember after Davis and Olly left, we all went to her basement, which was practically like an entertainment center and we danced around and stuff. After that dinner I think everyone felt like they were apart of the team, if they didn't before. I think that's why Davis and Olly still choose to do this.
This year, we all decided we wanted to go to a park. There were running trails everywhere and there was a soccer field, very convenient for us. There was also a lake farther down one of the trails but I doubt any one would jump in it. The water's freezing cold. There are grills scattered all around the park, and there's a group of picnic tables all arranged under a roof, and some picnic tables scattered around in other places.
Davis and Olly are hovering over one of the grills, setting it up so they can begin. Everyone brought something for today and put it on one of the tables. I decided to bring some soda and cookies my mom made the night before. I sat down at one of the tables with most of the team already seated there. I took a bag of chips and popped them open.
"So, I heard Iris went on a date last night." Beth teased.
"Really, who was the lucky guy?" Olly asked as he put meat on the grill, and looked over his shoulder at me. I wanted to hide under the picnic table right now. Instead, I covered half of my face with my palm. I knew I shouldn't have called Beth the next morning and told her about the date and Austin. I should have known she'd bring it up in front of everyone.
"Austin. He's one of the captians for the boys' team." She said smirking at me and Olly nodded his head in approval. "So Iris, how was the date?" She asked. I glared at her. She already knew how the damn date was.
"Fine." I said grabbing another chip. I didn't really want to be one of those girls who told every detail about a date to her friends when it wasn't even that serious. It was just a date, an amazing date. I haven't heard from Austin since last night, but I was kind of happy for that. I wouldn't really be sure of what to say.
"Anything interesting happen?" Valerie now asked.
"Nope," I said and then got up so I could go see what Davis and Olly were doing. I put my hands behind my back and stood up on my toes so I could peer over their shoulders. Davis was working on hamburgers and Olly stood beside him. "I want cheese on mine." I said and Davis jumped in surprise and I laughed. How could he not even feel me standing behind him? There wasn't much space between us, I would feel him if he was that close. Maybe I have a talent where I can go unnoticed by people, I should become a spy or secret agent. Is a secret agent a spy? I thought to myself and then shrugged my shoulders.
"You get what I give you." Davis said looking over his shoulder at me.
"Ah ah ah," I wagged my finger slightly, "don't forget my cheese." I said while patting his back and then proceeded to go back to the table. He better not forget my cheese. He won't hear the end of me if he does. I sat back down at the table and listened to all of the talk of my teammates. I just nodded my head but didn't add anything into the gossip. It's not like my teammates looked for drama, but they sure could fish it out if they wanted to. They pretty much knew everything about everyone, but everything they know could just be lies. Especially in a school like mine where people sell each other out and spread rumors to make themselves look better.
"So, I heard Carly is practically obsessed with you." Val said to me. I furrowed my eyebrows as I grabbed a cup and poured myself a drink. Oh, Carly, sweet, sweet, Carly. If they left us in a room together, just the two of us, without interruptions, one of us wouldn't make it out of that room alive.
"Ha," I said while I chuckled slightly.
"I'm serious. My friend Claire goes to their school and she says that Carly is always making some snide comment about you."
For some reason, out of all of the stories people told me today, I believed this one. That would be something I would expect of Carly. I think since day one she's had it out for me. I don't think I've done anything bad to her in the beginning for her to dislike me. Of course now that we're practically like rivals, there's no shutting either of us up. We both have too much of a big ego to let the other get the last word.
The food was ready so we all went up to get a plate and Davis handed me my plate, with a hamburger that had melted cheese on it. I smirked, my smirk probably gave off the message: that's what I thought. I didn't really want to test Davis though so I said thank you. He could probably just take my burger from me and make me starve for the rest of the day. Surprisingly, Davis made some awesome burgers. The girls agreed too and told him this. Yeah, build up his ego guys, smart thing to do.
After we all ate, we decided to go to the field and play some soccer. While I went to my car to get my cleats, I realized that Davis and Olly were going to play too. Now I was excited. This would be probably the first time they ever played with us. I wanted to see if Davis is as good as people made him out to be. I wanted to see if I could take him or not. I probably can, I mean he's like five hundred years old, how long can he even run before he collapses?
I walked onto the field and everyone was already on it. Davis was juggling the ball with his feet. I jogged in place slightly to warm myself up a bit. Yesterday's practice really did a number on me, well my ankle I should say. I would never let Davis know that though. I rolled my ankle around in circular patterns before we went and made teams. Beth and I were both the captians so we were choosing who we wanted on our team.
I got the first pick so I chose Olly. I wanted Beth to have Davis so I could go head to head with him, and plus Olly and I won't kill each other. If Davis was on my team, we would spend more time arguing than we would playing the game. It would be a train wreck. There was only sixteen girls on the team, so both sides had eight and then plus Olly and Davis.
Olly and Zo played up top. I played in mid with Maggie and some of the other girls and then there was three girls for defense. Beth and Val were up top for the other team and Davis was in mid. I smirked. I think he put himself in mid on purpose. I think he wants to go against me as bad as I want to go against him.
The game started and I let everyone know that Davis was my mark. I kept my eye on him the entire time we were on the field. He wasn't going to get past me, I wasn't going to allow it. Olly passed me the ball and I looked up slightly to see Davis standing a few feet away from me. Waiting for me to make a move. He gripped his shorts slightly with his fists as he watched the ball that was between my feet.
"Come on Grey, show me what you got." He said cockily and motioned for me to come to him. I narrowed my eyes at him and slowly began to dribble and manouever the ball toward him, thinking of a way to get past him. I realized he had me trapped against the sideline. The only direction I could go was straight, and he'd be there to shut me down. So I guess I had to go for it and hope my speed would get me past him. Davis can't be that fast. I scanned him over once, I could probably take him.
I charged towards him, making sure that my body was protecting the ball. In a matter of seconds, I felt his pressure on me. Crap, he was like a brick wall. His body pressed against me, practically tilting me to the other side, but I stuck my elbow out and tried to push him off and run past him. He wouldn't budge. It was like he was made of stone. I think he was entertaining himself right now. He could probably take this ball away from me right now if he really wanted to, but I think he enjoyed seeing me struggle against him more.
"Come on Iris, you're a tough guy aren't you? Get past me." He taunted and I continued my pushing and running but it got me nowhere. Davis shut me down each time and then finally took the ball from me and passed it up to Beth. He started to laugh and turned to look at me. "You can't beat me." He said and then proceeded to jog up the field. I scowled at his back and imagined him tripping right then.
I sighed and then went to catch up to him. He then got the ball and smirked up at me. Oh, I was ready for this. I began to pedal backwards as I stared down at the ball. He had good foot work. I was beginning to believe he was as good as everyone said he was. He still has his skill even though he walked the earth the same time dinosaurs did. Before I knew it, Davis was running and I was running beside him. Our shoulders were bumping against each other as we both played agressively. Obviously the agression affected me more than it affected Davis.
Davis took a bigger touch and I saw my chance and took the ball from him. I grinned to myself as I passed the ball up to Olly and let him do whatever. "Oh yeah!" I said doing a little victory dance. Davis was slightly catching his breath in front of me. "I totally got you. I just shut you down." I said smugly and he rolled his eyes. "Don't be too discouraged," I said while placing a hand on his shoulder, the both of us loved to trash talk each other. "You aren't half bad for your age." I said smiling evilly.
"My age?" He asked.
"Yeah, you know. Prehistoric times."
"I'll have you know I'm not much older than you." He said crossing his arms over his chest.
"Whatever you say, Grandpa." I began to laugh when he scowled at me and then in a matter of seconds he was chasing me. I shrieked and ran off the field. Everybody stopped playing to watch Davis chase after me. I ran toward the bridge that was over the lake and looked over my shoulder to see him still chasing me. Once I was on the middle of the bridge I turned and put my hands up. "Calm down old man." I said trying not to laugh again. Davis was freaking fast. Before I could react, he closed the distance between the two of us and then picked me up like I weighed nothing. He held me over the lake and I shrieked in horror. He can't drop me, that water probably isn't even three feet deep. I would bang my head and the water is freezing. "Okay okay, I'm sorry put me down."
"Am I old?" He asked. I didn't answer him. "Oh, my hands are getting a little tired. I think I should just let you go. What do you think?"
"Okay okay, you're not old." I said quickly as I scowled while upside down. "Not put me down." Old man.
"Who's the best coach ever?" I huffed in annoyance. I was getting a little light headed for being upside down this long. "Come on, you can say it."
"You are." I muttered under my breath.
"What? I can't hear you."
"You. Are.' I said through clenched teeth.
"And who can beat you in a game of soccer?" He asked, probably smirking and feeling good about himself right now. I consider this abuse right now. I should go to the school board and report him. I bit my tongue and refused to answer. He then began to shake me while I was upside down and I shrieked.
"You can! You can!" I said and he finally set me down. He was grinning like a mad man right now. I scowled at him and was ready to push him off the bridge. Idiot.
