chapter 8

Days went by with still no word. Jason was barely holding it together and the only reason he was doing it was because he had to take care of Hope. Everyone at school was acting as if nothing happened. Jo’s name was taken off all the rosters, it was almost like she never existed.

“Jason…when momma comin home?” Hope asked again with tear filled eyes.

“I don’t know sweetie. I’m trying really hard to find her but until then you can stay with me and my family. Your mommy trusts us and we’ll take good care of you.” Jason replied trying to ease the scared girls fears. Everything was turning upside down. Oh Jo, Jason thought, where are you.

Oh my pounding head, was the first thought that came to Jo’s mind as she started to wake up.

“Levi, she’s starting to come around.” she heard shuffling and was wonder who these people were. Levi was her fathers name but that couldn’t be possible. He died. But the guy who spoke…he sounded so familiar. Slowly she opened her eyes, worried that maybe there was a bright light on, but once she cracked her eyes and saw nothing, her eyes flew open and surveyed the area around her.

“UNCLE JOHN!!!” she exclaimed. “What are you doing here?”

“I got taken right after I found out you shifted. I’m sorry I never told you what you were. When you didn’t shift at the normal age, I didn’t see a point. Figured you never would. And I’m sorry you had to go through it alone. And….there’s someone here that you should see.”

She looked around and saw someone sitting in the corner. From the light coming through the tiny window, she could make out a familiar face. Tears began to stream down her face as she moved closer.

“Daddy??” she said in a whisper.

“Yea, baby. It’s me. I’m so sorry I didn’t get to you in time.” He said with a depressed look on his face.

“What? What do you mean? You just disappeared. We had no clue where you went. What do you mean by not getting to me in time?”

“You know that big wolf that killed the guy that raped you?” Jo nodded. “Well that was me. I tried to get there but I couldn’t. I was too slow. And then some guys threw a silver net over me, and I was helpless. There was no way I could get away.”

“That wolf….it was you. AND WHY DID YOU NEVER TELL ME THAT I WOULD TURN INTO A WOLF?!?!?!” Levi and John flinch away at her tone. “I THOUGHT I WAS GOING INSANE WHEN IT HAPPENED. There I was at school getting super pissed off and all of a sudden I was in incredible pain and then I was a wolf. AND NEITHER OF YOU TOLD ME IT WOULD HAPPENED.”

Levi and John were at a loss for words. Neither of them expected her to blow up. Finally Levi leaned forward to tell her his reasons, careful to not burn his legs with the padded silver chains around his wrists.

“Well hun, a young wolf is supposed to make their first shift a few months after they hit puberty. I figured I would explain it to you when the time came. But I was gone by then and with these silver chains on, I have no way to get away.”

“When the time was right?? Shouldn’t that be something you should be explaining BEFORE it happens. I would have known everything if it hadn’t been for you keeping it a secret. So much for happy reunions, huh. I got a dad and uncle who have been keeping secrets, a daughter that I have NO clue as to what is happening her to and not to mention, we’ve all been kidnapped…this is just great.”

Sliding down the wall, Jo was exhausted after her rant. Absorbed in her own head, thinking about Hope, she didn’t realize that her dad was trying to get her attention. Turning to look at him, she sees the chains.

“Hang on…why are you chained up and not me or Uncle John.”

“I don’t know, sweetie. My guess is its because John’s human and you’re a newly shifted wolf. Neither of y’all are as strong as I am, seeing as I’m supposed to be Alpha. Now, the sun is going down. No point in staying up if we cant see each other. Get some rest. We’ll talk more in the morning, try to make an escape plan.”

And with that they all huddled up in separate corners trying to stay warm. Hearing her father starting to snore, Jo went and curled up next to him and slowly drifted into a dreamless sleep.
