chapter 9

Waking up, Jo noticed her uncle and her dad huddled in a corner whispering. She scooted closer so she can join in the conversation.

“You can’t just stay here while we goes. She needs guidance, leadership. She knows absolutely nothing about being a shifter. I’ll be the one to make the distraction and let y’all escape. I’m the human one and I have no one that needs me, especially now that Jo and Hope have you. You need to train her so she can fight for her rightful position. Either that or you need to take it back yourself. I suggest you do it until Jo is ready to lead.” John said with certainty in his voice.

“If that is what you think is best. You’ve been more of a father figure for her throughout these past couple of years anyways. I’ll trust you on this. I’m gonna miss you old friends. I will always remember you just like I will always remember my wife. We will hold a memorial for you when I take lead. Sorry to say this, but since you’re human, there is zero chance of you getting out of that alive.”

“NO! I won’t you do this Uncle John. You’re all I’ve had these past years. Hope needs you, I need you.” Neither Levi or John heard her come up behind them. “I’ve gone all this time without HIM, but you, you took me in when I had no where to go. To cared for Hope and we love you. You can’t leave us like this.”

“I’m sorry but I have to. You and your father are more important. Your not ready to take the Alpha position. You have no training and there is no way that you can defeat the current Alpha. Your father must go with you. He has to make things right in town and he has to train you to take his spot when he is ready to step down. There’s no way around it. This is my role to play so I must do it.” Jo bowed her head as tears ran down her face. She realized what her uncle was right but she didn’t want to give him up. He meant to much to her.

“I’m gonna miss you.” she said as she sobbed into his shirt. He patted her back as he tried to calm her down.

“There there, my little cub,” he said awkwardly. He had never been in this situation before. Jo had always been strong and never cried. Or at least not around him.

“Little cub?? What the heck? That’s the only thing you could think of? Really?” Jo looked at him with one eyebrow raised.

“Yea it was. Now someone should be showing up any minute to give us breakfast…not that its much. Anyways, that’s when the plan will be put into action. I’ll attack and you two shift and run. Don’t worry about me. I’m going to be with my sister finally.”

“But what about dad’s chains. Their silver. He can’t do anything with them on.” Just then she looked done and saw that they where gone. “Where’d they go?”

“John got them off. He’s the only one of us that can touch silver and they weren’t locked. Guess they never thought of that one. Figured since it hurt to touch silver, I wouldn’t try to get them off because it would hurt too bad.”

Footstep could be heard outside of the door and they soon saw a shadow at the top of the stair. John went and hid by the wall next to the stair and waited for the guy to come down.

As soon as the shadow was close enough, he pounced and took him to the ground. Being in complete shock that a human would actually have the nerve to attack a shift, the guy did nothing for a while. Long enough to John to bash his head into the ground and knock him out.

“Well…that was easier than expected. Guess I’m coming with you guys.” Jo and Levi shifted into their wolves and John climbed on to Jo’s back. She looked back at him and huffed as if to say ‘Why me??’ “Well for one thing, you’re easier to climb onto. And also if we run into anyone on the way out, your dad is the one who knows how to fight. Can’t fight with me on his back, now can he?” With a shake of her head, they took off. Strangely enough they ran into no one else in the building

‘Hey dad, is it just me or is it entirely too quiet in here’ she asked through their mind link.

‘Yea Hun. It is. Keep your ears open. With all these hallways they’ll be more useful than your eyes’ Everything went smoothly, until they got outside.

Making a perimeter around the building were at least 50 wolves, all of them waiting to attack at their Alpha command.

‘Shit’

‘You got that right kiddo. Ummmm, let me see if I can do something. I’m the rightful Alpha so even though I don’t have the title right now, my command should at least stall them.’ With that, he sat back and let out a long, deep and powerful howl. The wolves standing around them relaxed a little but soon when back on the offensive. He let out another howl and Jo could hear some rustling in the forest around them. Soon, 40 wolves came out and stood behind Levi. With a shocked look on his face, he looked behind him and saw them all bow their heads in submission. They were still loyal to him.

‘Jo, take John to the back of the pack. Stay there with him and under no circumstances are you allowed to join the fight. We cannot have you getting killed.’ He looked at her until she submitted and did as he said. Turning around to look at his faithful pack, he let out a fearsome howl and at the same time told them ‘Now lets go kill that bastard!’
