Every time a new character speaks it has to be on a new line, no exceptions. That should make it so that your story looks somthing like this:
"Whare are you doing?" Amanda asked.
"Nothing," John said as his slid the knife back into his pocket.
If you don't do this every time there is a new speaker then the dialogue can become difficult to read and can cause for the reader to turn away from your story in favor of another. Besides, not doing it just makes the story appear sloppy.
