Chapter 20.

One point in life there's this sudden fear of death. Whether it's placed in front, or it's just a thought that comes across. There's this pull in my chest that's built up with all the thoughts of what I wish I did. All of life's regrets came punching in my gut as the ice water froze my body.

My paws waved in front of me, trying to reach back to the small flicker of light shining through the hole I had fallen through. It felt like I weighed a ton, my fur sinking me further down into the lake. My chest was beginning to tighten from the lack of oxygen, and I watched as the last air bubbles leave from my mouth. Black spots danced across my vision as I fought as hard as I could to reach the surface.

I heard the sound of someone jumping in the water, and felt two muscular arms wrap around my neck. They struggled to lift me out of the water from all my struggling, but when my head reached the surface I couldn't help but gasp for air. I began whimpering, my paws scratching the ice but unable to pull myself up from all the sliding.

"Penny shift." Lucian begged, gasping as he tried to hold up my wolf. "Penny if you don't shift right now we're both going to either drown or freeze to death."

It didn't take long before I was shifted and completely naked in the already freezing water. Lucian grabbed the bottom of my legs and pushed me out making me nearly fly through the air. I landed roughly on the thick ice, grunting as my body landed roughly on it. I heard Lucian pull himself out of the ice with some difficulty but managed to run over to me the moment he got out.

"I know you're cold baby." He apologized, wrapping his arms around my body and carrying me bridal style. "Come on, the faster we get home the faster you'll be warm."

He shifted almost instantly and setting me down again, shaking the water from his long coat before tossing my effortlessly onto his back. He howled, clearing informing the pack about what had happened. My lip was quivering, and I could only imagine that they were a deep shade of blue. Lucian whimpered when he felt my hold on him loosen, and he quickened his pace toward the pack house.

Luckily it wasn't that far, but it was still a mild run to it. Lucian shifted the minute we got onto the porch, and he lifted me into his arms. My mate ran, both of us stark naked, looking for the pack doctor or anyone to help. When we caught a glimpse of Sheila's greying red hair Lucian called out for her.

All at once everyone came crowding, women throwing blankets over the both of us and guiding us down the hall. I saw my mom approach, her face ghostly pale just by looking at me. Her violet eyes locked onto Lucian's vibrant green ones, her white hair sticking up in several places clearly showing her worry.

"What happened?" She asked as he lay me gently on the comfortable bed.

"Everything was solid on the lake, there weren't any weak spots." He rambled on, running his hand through his wet blond hair as he was handed a pair of jeans. "She stepped exactly where I stepped so I don't understand."

Sheila wrapped several blankets comfortably over me and she placed a warm cloth on my forehead. She looked over at Lucian worriedly, clearly assessing whether he needs medical help. He glanced at her and shook his head at her, clearly indicating that he didn't need her help and he was perfectly fine. The moment she got his message she turned back to treating me.

"Witches can't break ice can they?" My mom asked biting her lip worriedly.

"This is the last straw." Lucian snarled underneath his breath. "That Ayana bitch has put Penny in danger too much. I've had it with watching from the sidelines.
"We got allies now, a few Alphas arrived a few hours ago and are speaking with Clayton right now." My mom added, looking at me one last time before leaving the room.
