"Okay, wanna try something?" Kaylie asked Noelle as she stared down at her. Noelle nodded while she was perched in my girlfriend's lap while Brielle was climbing all over me like a jungle gym.
I watched as Noelle's face turned into fear, shock, then excitement.
"I can hear you in my head!" Noelle beamed. I can tell by the way her face twisted in concentration that she was working on trying to send a message back. It's cute.
"Can ya hear me?"
"Yes, Noe," Kaylie laughed and tickled the little girl's face.
"Time to go to bed, girls!" The twins complained but slowly drug themselves to their bedroom.
"Why aren't they my children?" Kaylie sighed as she laid her head on my leg.
"Maybe because you're not married, you're not pregnant, I haven't even allowed the chance of pregnancy to occur yet, ya know. The usual."
"Then let's get married."
"One day, I promise you. Just not today, not right now," I threw her over my shoulder and to our bedroom where we slept hand in hand and heart to heart.
—
Blinding light burned my eyes. I refused to move and hid myself under the covers. Lots of rustling and bustling went around the room, but it wasn't Kaylie. Kaylie wasn't next to me, nor near me at all. There was no heat where she used to lay. That was what made me get up.
"Kaylie!" I called out, throwing the covers off the bed with so much force they tumbled across the room. The room was empty. There was no trace of Kaylie at all.
I scrambled out of bed and ran from the room only to run into someone.
"What, you dickwad?" I looked down to find Kaylie's small figure on the floor. I helped her up and smoothed out her disorderly hair.
"You weren't in the bed and I just thought that you were gone again like this never happened and I panicked, I'm sorry."
"I'm fine, it's just that the twins are missing. They aren't in their beds. Anthony and Allison are checking the bathrooms and backyard.
"I'll check out front, maybe they got out," I rubbed my eyes and took the steps downstairs. I swung the door open lazily and peered out front. Left, then right, and still nothing. I even took a jog around to the sides of the house. No trace of twins.
I stepped back onto the porch to open the door again when I noticed it. It was unbelievable how no one had seen it yet. The door was dented in, disfigured and claw marks chipped the red paint.
Someone has been here.
"Guys, we gotta go, and now!" I raced up the stairs where I found everyone pondering in the twins' room.
"What's wrong?"
"Someone took the girls. Get your suits because whoever it was, is big, strong, and dangerous."
"What are you talking about?"
"Have you not seen the front door? It doesn't even close properly!" I shook my head and turned to go get my suit. Soon after, Kaylie did the same.
Five minutes later, we assembled in the hallway and even Allison joined us wearing all black.
"I've listened to the police radar, there's some animal ravaging in downtown Houston. Is that what you were talking about?"
"Yup,"
"If the twins aren't nearby, they could be anywhere."
We all ran out of the house, which probably wasn't a good idea in our suits but whatever. As we approached downtown, a trail of claw marks and destruction followed the path of the animal. It had a destination, as it twisted and turned through the streets in a pattern, not at random or provocation.
"There!" I pointed to wear the animal stopped and a hooded man and the twins stood together in the middle of the destroyed street.
"Give me my children!" Anthony yelled as he approached the group. The animal sneered with its large teeth when he came too close.
I have no idea how we'd battle this beast and survive. The black fur it wore was unruly and it's claws were massive. But the most intimidating feature of this creature was its size. On all fours he stood much taller than I and probably had the strength of two of me.
I looked to my left and saw Kaylie standing there with a blank expression. She wasn't paying attention to anything that was going on. She reached an arm out which confused me until the twins appeared in her arms.
They've got powers already?
"Ni, toss me up!" Kaylie had the girls in her arms and ran towards me. With her foot in the palms of my hands, I pushed them into the air fast enough that they escaped the reach of the animal's paws. Anthony had already started to blind the animal and the fear he induced made it thrash around.
Kaylie rejoined us soon after leaving the twins with their mother. Somehow, the beast was released from the trance and was now ready to pounce on us.
"So, uh... Run?"
Kaylie had already taken off in the opposite direction as fast as her feet could take her. I had to hurry after her because she quickly turned a corner and dashed into a business building.
"What are you doing?!" I yelled as she unraveled the firehouse from the first floor.
"I have a plan. Now yank this thing out of the wall and meet me on the sixth floor."
Ten feet of hose and five flights of stairs later, I found Kaylie on the sixth floor accompanied by fearful workers.
"We're not in New York, we can't do whatever and get away with it," I reminded her as she started pushing desks out of the way.
"Good thing they don't know me," she took one end of the hose and let the other to me.
"Jump out the window, each of us on one side of his neck, swung under and over to make a leash.
"You sure this'll work?"
"Positive... Sorta."
"Babe!"
"Jump!" She took off towards the window and burst through the glass. She looked as comfortable when we fell as she did the first day I saw her.
And she was right, it worked. Leashed, we were able to drive the animal back to the main street.
"Aha, so–fuck," Kaylie's victory immediately flipped. The man who once held the twins now had Allison at gunpoint.
"I'll give you your wife back, only in exchange for her." The man nodded over to Kaylie. I stepped in front of Kaylie while looking over at Anthony.
"We can work something out. I have sacks of money upon money. Anything for my wife please," Anthony begged the man, but he only tightened his grip on the trigger.
"I want the girl."
"Deal!" She shouted from behind me. I reached out to keep her from going around me but she twisted out of my grasp.
"Kaylie!" I yelled for her to come back but she only looked at me.
Don't make it harder than this needs to be.
"Kaylie, don't. I'll be fine," Allison tried to reassure her as Kaylie took the gun away from Allison's head.
"I can't let them live without a mom like I did. I'm not okay now and I never will be."
Allison was pushed to Anthony who took her into the tightest hug. The man took Kaylie to the beast where they mounted and rode it away, the gun never leaving her head.
"Why don't you go after her?"
"She doesn't want me to."
i got some shit
planned and it's
gonna kill you
