"Ready?" Max asked Phoenix gripping her little pale hand tightly.
"Ready!" Phoenix echoed with excitement. I smiled and looked at my beautiful girlfriend and daughter.
"Now jump!" I yelled and off they went. I could hear Phoenix laughing as they both shot out there wings. Max's white and brown wings were at least two times as bigger than Phoenix's bluish black ones.
"Let the air currents hoist you up." Max instructed. Phoenix complied and did very well at it.
When neither were looking, I jumped off the cliff and started to follow them. Phoenix was struggling a bit, but she got the hang of it soon. She tried to let go of Max's hand but Max wouldn't let her. After a few seconds, I came around to the left side of Phoenix, just past Max's wings.
"Do you want to continue little miss? Or do you want to go back to your cave?" I asked Phoenix taking her small hand. She looked at me all sad like.
"I want to continue, but without you guys holding my hands." I shot Phoenix a look that made her stop pouting and listen.
Max and I taught her a few more things about flying forward before I felt she was ready for no hands. I felt Max staring at me and looked over. She nodded to me and I nodded back understandingly.
"Are you tired, Phoenix?" I asked slowly letting go of her hand. She told me that she wasn't and then Max reluctantly gave up on holding her hand.
"Yay!" Phoenix squealed with delight. She started to fly forward far ahead of Max and I, but we always kept a safe distance behind her. All of a sudden Phoenix started to slow and then her wings stopped flapping.
"Mommy! Daddy!" She screamed. I dive bombed right to where she was. My face felt hot and I had to wipe away a few tears so I could she her fully. I snatched up a bawling and petrified Phoenix seconds before hitting the ground. When she was safely in my arms, she curled up in a little ball. I flew back to a crying Max and she tried to give me a hug, that didn't really work out. I was silently crying the whole flight back to the Flock.
We flew back to the ruins where we started and when we reached safe ground, I laid Phoenix down on the ground before laying myself down next to her.
I don't remember much of what happened next I was so tired. I closed my eyes and Phoenix laid her head on my stomach. I moved my hand down and rubbed her hair a couple times.
"Iggy, can you go get some water?" Max asked. I heard Iggy get up and leave. I must have dozed off for a little while, because the next thing I remember was Max hitting my arm and yelling at me. I opened my eyes and she was over top of me staring down. I smiled looking into those big brown eyes made me so happy. She didn't return the smile.
"Fang," she said, her voice full with concern. "We have a problem. Phoenix heard voices. From underground."
