Dinah's P.O.V.
I drove to Melanie's house the long way because I couldn't go back the way where my old house was. It was no longer safe for me on this street, and I'm not going to risk an attack from my father just to shorten the distance to my destination.
The sun threatened to disappear into a dark blue sky more and more each minute. It was like watching a diver dive into a darkening pool in slow-motion. It gently kissed the edges of the the earth's surface by the time I got to Melanie's house.
I knocked a couple times and then wiped my face of the dried tears so that I looked presentable enough.
"Dinah what's wrong?" Melanie asked as she opened the door.
I reached for her and pulled her into a deep hug. "They kicked me out."
"What do you mean? Did they find out?"
I nodded my head and burried it deep in her shoulder.
"Oh my gosh, your forehead is bleeding! Did they hurt you?"
Words refused to come out evenly. The sounds that came from my mouth were shrill and ugly with desperation. "He threw me out through the door and I tripped. My head hit the sidewalk when I fell."
"Honey, it's cold outside. Bring your friend inside," her mother called out.
"It's Dinah, mom!"
"Oh, hey Dinah," she said smiling before she saw my sobbing face. "Goodness, what's wrong, honey?"
"My family kicked me out and I have nowhere to go," I said through the waterfall that had coated my face.
"Honey, you have to go back. Just talk to them."
Melanie turned to her mother with shock in her eyes. "Mom, you don't know them. They won't let her back in. Look at this gash her father left on her head! Do you honestly think that he'll take her back in?"
"Nonsense. She can't stay here we barely have food for ourselves!"
"It's okay. I can just move in with my uncle," I said as I ran out the house.
"Dinah! Come back!" Melanie yelled.
