"Oh my gosh, you guys are the freaking best." Cole was the first to comment after the boys stood outside the room the two women had the surprise in.
The room's walls were covered wit pictures. Not one inch of the plain beige wall was seen. On the wall you would be looking at when you walked straight in was pictures of the entire family's kids. Their cousins, their nieces and nephews, their siblings, their young uncles and aunts. Everyone that was eighteen and younger was on that wall.
A picture of each of them was in the middle of the wall plus a picture of all six of them together.
The other boys were speechless. They didn't know what they thought would be shown when their crazy aunts told them they had a surprise for them but it definitely wasn't this. This was amazing, probably taking a lot of time and effort to do.
David stepped forward first. Followed by Gave, then Dalton, then Will, then Dana and finally Cole. Then David reached his arm out and touched his picture delicately. It was a picture of him from just this summer. He had been at the gym at that time.
He then looked at his brother's photos. Cole's was of him standing by a fountain, holding up a peace sign and smiling like his life depended on it. Dalton's was an action shot of him running down a grassy hill. Gabe's was him sitting on a bench on his phone. Will's was of him playing piano. Dana's was of when they had went to a party and Dana had been taking numerous amounts of selfies.
The picture of all of them together was probably David's favourite though. It was like one of those pictures you'd see online when you search the word family on Google images. One of those seemingly perfect families where everyone was happy. They had been at a playground when the picture was taken. Gabe was sat cross-legged in the middle of the photo on the ground in front of the play structure. Dana was hanging off his legs on the monkey bars. Cole was standing on the swing's seat, gripping the chains. Will was sitting on top of the highest point on the structure. Dalton was riding one of those horses that were on a spring so you could actually move on them. And finally, David himself was sat in the middle of a seesaw.
They were all facing the camera and smiling. David remembered that day well, they had all been having fun. Up until a little after that photo was taken. Dalton fell off the horse-thing and got a splinter on the wood pieces, Will fell off the structure and would've been seriously injured in he hadn't landed on top of Gabe, Dana was stuck on top of the monkey bars, the blood rushing to his head making him puke. Cole fell backwards on the swing and almost cut his head open. David was fine though, he had chosen a good spot. Although he had lost circulation in his legs due to being seated for so long and fell over when trying to get up.
Good times, good times.
"I'm assuming y'all like the surprise then?" Steph laughed, still standing at the doorway with her fiancé
Aunt Megs just laughed along with her and messed up Cole and Dalton's hair after approaching the boys.
"How long did this take?" Dana asked, admiring the rest of the room, trying to find the picture of their mom and dad.
"Quite a while actually. Five or six months tops. Believe it or not, it's hard to find good pictures of Ezzie.
Ezzie was the Pendery boys' cousin. He was good-looking it was just that he wasn't very photogenic.
"Ezekiel is cool though, has he seen this?" Will butted in and pointed to their cousin's picture a couple of pictures up.
"Nope, only you six have seen it. We just finished up yesterday." Aunt Megs answered cheerfully.
"Wow." Was all David could say
Their aunt and aunt-to-be just laughed and escorted them out of the room. Then the two went downstairs to do who knows what. They left the boys on the main floor though, hoping they wouldn't get into any trouble.
"Are we a happy family?" Will asked suddenly.
"Of course we are! Why would you think otherwise?" Gabe said, immediately going into big brother mode.
"Because we're growing apart." The Asian's bottom lip quivered
Gabe tried to find something to say to that but he couldn't, because he knew it was true. What kind of big brother was he that he couldn't even comfort his 14 year old brother?!
"No we're not." Dana said. "If we were then you guys wouldn't be buying me presents on my birthday."
He was trying to lighten the mood but he knew it wouldn't happen so easily.
"But Cole and Dalton are always fighting. Gabe wants to move out, so he's always fighting with mom. You're going to leave us for a life of girls. David has a grudge against Gabe. And I just don't want this!" Will say on the ground and brought his knees up to his chest.
Cole frowned and took his brother's hand, bringing him to their room. Will sometimes broke down like this, their parents guessed it was anxiety problems. It happened a little too frequently and it was usually either Cole or David who went to talk to him in private. The other boys knew not to follow.
"Great, can I chill in your room first?" Dana said, he was sharing a room with the two that just left.
"Sure bro. This one seems bad." Dalton muttered, looking in the direction the two boys left.
In truth, they all wanted a happy family. Their arguing was getting a little out of hand as well. It usually wasn't all too bad but lately it's been getting worse, and no one knew how to fix it just yet.
