Alex laid down on the ground, exhausted from her day's work. She set her sword down on the grass beside her, keeping it close as she always had. Alex was always alert, and she always had been. She knew she would be unable to fall asleep tonight; not that falling asleep was ever easy, but it would be especially hard tonight. Knowing that she was being hunted; that she was both predator and prey; that there was something out in the night that wanted her dead....
The night seemed to close in on her, the darkness like walls around her...
The night air was crisp and cool, and Alex, her bright green eyes the color of the grass beneath her, her red hair the color of the roses in the bush a few yards away, lay on the ground with nothing but her ashen grey hoodie separating her from the cold dirt. She began to drift off to sleep, and then....
Leaves crunched in the distance.
Probably just a squirrel. Alex thought, but then, remembering her quick dismissal earlier that day, jumped to her feet. There was in fact something moving in the shadows. Alex clutched her sword in her sweaty hand, and used her power of light to illuminate the figure. All she could see was a silhouette, the creature was as tall, if not taller, than she was.....
And it was definitely not a squirrel.
