In his dark hall, inside his dark palace, Lord Anubis howled and his Jackal dogs howled with him.

Two of his warriors knelt at the foot of the steps that led to the throne. The sword-arm of one of them was bandaged, but blood still seeped through the bindings.

"Can you explain to me," growled the God, pacing up and down, "how a few unarmed Sword Maidens, - no! - not Sword Maidens, but novices, mere girls! were able to disarm one of my fully-armed warriors, kill another and disable a third?"

"There were too few of us," replied the one with the wounded arm, visibly trembling, "We thought it would be easy."

"As it should have been. Are you telling me that my Jackals should go in fear of these...women?"

"They are very fast, Great God," replied the other, lamely, "and...they have courage."

"They will need it," declared Anubis, "for I will not let a slight like this go unavenged. And whether she chooses me or no, I will tame this Lioness."

"Should we attack, then, My Lord?" the wounded one asked. "It would not be difficult to storm the gates to Her precinct, find the novices and...punish them."

"Your judgement is as poor as your sword-skills," Anubis sneered. "How do you imagine Lord Ra would respond were we to attack his beloved daughter, right here - in the City Of the Gods?"

He paused for thought.

"No," he said, finally. "We must find other ways"
