Zombies

Forty zombies. Two unexperienced fighters, one armed with a pole, the other with a kitchen knife. What was she thinking? Yuno thought as she ran forward. We'll both be killed! Her knife slammed into one of the zombie's head. Blood, fluid, and odd grey chunks Yuno didn't want to think about splattered up her arm. The zombie fell. Left, right, left, left again, Yuno kept hitting. She couldn't see through the wriggling bodies. Oddly, it reminded her of the first, and only, time she had ever been to a club. There had been so many people dancing, so closely packed together, that she couldn't breathe. The collision of fragrances in the room had nearly driven her insane. For some reason, she found, this was better. The smell of rotten flesh was better than those ugly fragrances, the slime of their skin better than rough flesh. There weren't as many zombies now. Yuno could see Mitsuka, still swinging that thoroughly dented pipe. Then they were gone, only Yuno and Mitsuka left standing.

"Mitsuka," Yuno started. "Did you notice that all those zombies are rotten? They are only 2 days old, right?"

"Yeah." Mitsuka replied, looking at the corpses surrounding them. "Aren't they meant to rot that fast?" she asked.

"No. It should take at least a week to start rotting, I think. I'm not sure. But two days is definitely too short a time." Yuno explained.

"So they rot too quickly..." Mitsuka mused.

"Obviously, whatever radioactive disease is causing this, it increases the rotting time of the flesh." A voice came from behind them. They whirled around, automatically pointing their weapons at the intruder. He raised his hands, raising one eyebrow slightly too.

"Sorry to scare you," he said, looking anything but. "My name is Kane. I was hiding in the pantry." He explained, chuckling slightly. "Say." He stopped, looking scared. "You're two of the patients who were in the blast aren't you?"

"Yes and no." Yuno explained defensively. "Mitsuka and I waited behind a short while after the blast so she could finish her sentence." Kane nodded.

"Okay. So you weren't in the blast?"

"Not that we know of. We got hit by the edges, but that's it."

"Thank goodness!" Kane gasped. "Can I stay with you?" he asked. "I can't fight."

"Sure!" Mitsuka grinned. "Welcome to the team! Can we take some food now?" she asked Yuno.

"Good idea." Yuno and Kane said at the same time. Mitsuka laughed. They smiled sheepishly, and Yuno walked toward the pantry.

"Well, actually, Miss," Kane said shyly. "You should not just grab food for now. Stock up. We will need a lot of things to survive the zombie apocalypse." He said, a note of enthusiasm entering his tone.

"What does apocalypse mean?" Mitsuka asked.

"It means that a lot of people have died and the human world is ending." Kane said.

"Smooth. Real smooth," Yuno scolded him. "She's five!" Kane winced.

"Sorry. But I always believe it's better to know what's happening than not to know due to coddling." He said calmly.

"It's okay, Miss V'reach" Mitsuka said. "What do we need to live, Mr Kane?"

"Umm... Food, water, medicine, shelter, weapons." He counted off on his fingers.

"We can get all of that here!" Mitsuka said happily. Kane smiled.

"So we can." His smile turned into a grin. "Let's go!" Yuno rolled her eyes and went to get the food.
