Chapter 1

"Your Majesty, the meeting will start very soon - shall I escort you back into the palace or?"

Taking a deep breath in his eyes watches his kingdom running peacefully and smoothly, glancing behind him he excuses his butler wanting to be alone. Today, he have everything - the throne, the status, the people and the respect. Yet what he is missing is the person who helped him through all of the hardships - the one who been at his side when he was nothing but scum. However he doesn't regret it, even if they both have chosen different paths. They could've been together, they could be standing here admiring their kingdom which they have fought to shape together.

Though, unwilling to be played by destiny they have to part. No. In fact it was only that person who was willing to go against fate.

Smiling to himself he remembered what that person once said

'When a bird is locked up in a cage for too long, when the door is open - do you know what happens?'

Turning around he walks back into the palace.

'The bird won't fly out, why? It's because it's scared that if it does it won't be able to survive'

This palace is his cage, the place where he started and will be the place where he will end.

Many years ago.

A/N: This is the start of the story, the main character is not the same as the person who was mentioned just before.

"Raine! Wake up!" The banging on my door soon became unbearable, pulling my pillow over my head I tried to block out the sound but that wasn't even enough to block the constant yelling of my mother and the banging on my door. "ALRIGHT!" I yelled throwing the pillow aside and groggily opening the door only to meet the eyes of my angry mother. "Raine! Do you have any idea what time it is?!" Pointing at her watch I yawned "Yeah, it's 2pm. Is it tea time already?" "TEA TIME!?" her voice yelled and the volume bar just went to the next level, and the fact that my ears are sensitive I winced "Mum, I know… calm down" I patted hers shoulders. I know what she's angry about, today is the annual ball held at the palace. Oh yeah, sorry just let me head to the bathroom and brush my teeth first.

So the deal is…. actually where should I start? Well let's start with the fact that this ball my mum is all worked up about is actually a ball held for werewolves. No surprise there… wait are you listening? It's not shocking at all, I heard humans love to exaggerate on our species and a few others. Anyways, the werewolf society is pretty cool, there isn't a lot of us, there's 4 packs that is under the royal family. The royal family is the ones with the purest werewolf powers, and for that reason are the most powerful so they sort of keep us in control. Then again there is a few odd rogues here and there, but nothing we can't deal with but then again they often go off and mix with the humans which is a bit troublesome, I'll tell you the proper details about werewolves and humans later. Way too early in the morning - anyway, the ball today is where all of the 4 packs all gather around, communicate with each other and bonding. More importantly the royals also make an appearance as well. So it is a big, big deal - to my mother anyway.

Skip the history stuff, to introduce myself my name is Raine Avery - don't worry I asked my mother why did she name me Raine, she said it was because she gave birth to me during a storm but didn't want to call me Rain so she added an 'e' - creative I know, hence the sarcasm. My dad is the beta of the Northern Moon Pack, biggest pack out of the 4 that there is, the others are: Southern Moon Pack, Eclipse Moon Pack and Lunar Moon Pack. As the only child, I have been spoilt - in fact my mother and father have been very overprotective over me, my mother as you can tell is really strict as well. Inside our pack house, the population of females and males are almost equal so it isn't like I'm the only one of the few girls in the house but I am one of the very few girls in the house that actually keeps their legs closed unlike the majority of them who keep them open like freaking 24 hours supermarkets - open all day and welcomes anyone.

As a werewolf, the advantage is that we age like humans but we live three times longer and we do die eventually unless there is an situation that includes our fatal weakness - silver. Proudly I'd like to say I'm 18 years old - with brown hair and violet eyes, I'm actually the only one in the pack that has violet coloured eyes, most to the pack say to me that my eyes seem that it could almost look into their soul. Creepy but at least that adds value to me, and I think it true that it seems I can look into people's souls because when I speak to someone if I look into their eyes long enough I can almost understand them deeply as if I've known them for years.

Walking down the stairs I see Jayden and Linda kissing each other and perhaps getting a bit heated "Woah, it's so nice to see my best friend getting in action with his mate" I rolled my eyes and quickly pulling away Jayden glances at me whilst pulling Linda to his side wrapping his arm around her waist. "Don't be cranky, you'll be all over your mate when you find him as well" He smirks whilst Linda chuckles "Have you just woke up Raine?" She asks the obvious - don't get me wrong Linda is nice but she is just as possessive as Jayden is with her, I sometimes think she hates the idea that me and Jayden are best friends.

"Yeah… What time is this ball again?" I asked before walking pass them "I heard it is at 7pm" Jayden answers following behind me whilst I walked into the living room that is already filled with pack members, all doing their own things. "Raine!" Zain walks over, wrapping his arm around my shoulder "So the princess is finally awake" He smirks whilst looking down at me with his blue eyes - "Please… it's your fault I'm up late" Pushing him away lightly he laughs, it was actually his fault for making me stay up late by challenging myself and a few in the game 'Big Two' where he said he learnt. "In what way?" Wriggling his eyebrows like a pervert. "Dude, if you still want to carry on being my partner to the ball tonight I suggest you lay off those ideas" Walking away from him faintly I could hear a few fellow pack members laughing at how he just got owned by a girl.

Walking into the kitchen my father was already cooking tea - yes he's the beta and he cooks, my father is my idea of my perfect guy, one that is strong and can actually cook as well - too bad I don't have a choice of what's going to be thrown at me since it's all about the mate business. To think of it, my parents are starting to get worried about the idea of my mate. I'm nearly 19, people find their mates or is able to find their mates after the age of 16 - and since I can't find my mate I can't shift, whoever made this rule is such a genius. It is also exactly the reason that I haven't found my mate my parents is forcing me to this ball - usually those who go to the ball is the Alpha's family, followed by the beta on his own and a few fighters in the pack, but apparently my mother thought it'll be a good chance for me to find my mate. Which was a great idea.
