CHAPTER 2

"Ok, well since you're old enough to have the necklace, you're old enough to know the reason why you have it and why it changes temperatures around certain people."

Thank gosh they are going to tell me! Even though I’m kind of scared to know, I just have to know or I will go crazy because I hate not knowing stuff.

“Sweetie,” my dad says after an awkward silence “When you were born, God gave your doctor a necklace to give to us. When you turn 17, it is time to give it to you.” Ok , that’s really strange. It’s kind of cool though. I mean a necklace from God, that is amazing! Now this necklace is even more special.

“Wait,” I say breaking another silence, “Why did it change temperatures when Isobel and I were at the mall?” My parents looked at each other and I’m anxiously awaiting their answer. Gosh they need to hurry up before I go crazy.

“Well honey, it’s kind of strange so don’t freak out, okay?” I nod and my mom continues. “When you are around a guy who is just going to use you to get in your pants, the necklace will get freezing cold. When you are around a guy who will be a boyfriend or maybe just a good friend, the necklace will get warm. When you are around your soulmate, the necklace will get scorching hot. The same thing happens for guys, except the doctor has a tattoo design when they are born and when they turn 17, they get the tattoo.” Oh my gosh. What in the world!? How can a necklace predict the relationship I will have with people? Oh right, because God gave it to me. I can’t believe something like this is actually possible.

“Wait,” I say, finally realizing something, “My necklace was scorching hot at the mall today. Does that mean that my soulmate was at the mall!? Oh my gosh this is too crazy.” I know now that I wasn’t going crazy earlier and that my necklace really was hot. I also know that my soulmate was at the mall today. And again I can’t believe something like this is actually possible.

“Yes sweetie that means your soulmate was at the mall today. I know that this is a lot to take in and I’m sorry that we didn’t tell you when we first gave you the necklace. Please don’t be angry.”

What.in.the.actual.heck.is.going.on. My soulmate was at the mall!?!?!? There were too many people to even begin to guess who it is. I mean, my soulmate!? That is just too crazy for me. Wait, Isobel's got cold. So that means the guy checking her out was just gonna use her for sex. Well great, I'm sure she'll believe me on that. Psh, not. I wonder if she's asking her parents about it... I wonder if they'll tell her the truth.

"Ali?" Dylan says as he comes down the stairs, "Are you alright? You sounded like you were upset?" How does he know that I'm upset? It's like he can read minds or something. I wish I could.

"We told her about the necklace," mom says after a short silence, "Her necklace got hot when she went to the mall today. Meaning, her soul mate was there today." Okay, I guess I can't talk anymore or something? Ugh whatever. From the expression in Dylan's face, it seems like he's scared or something.

"Do you know who it was? Did you see him? I'm gonna have to find him and talk to him. Tell me who it is Alice." Woah, okay Dylan needs to pipe down.

"Dyl, it's ok calm down. I didn't see anybody that looked amazing and I don't know who it is so you can forget about finding him because I have no clue. You don't have to go so crazy, I can protect myself." Gosh my brother is crazy.

"Ali I'm supposed to go crazy. You're my little sister so it's my job to be protective, espcially when it comes to guys. Trust me, when I go to college in a few weeks, you're going to miss my protectiveness." I roll my eyes, knowing that would annoy the crap outta him. Hehehe, I'm mean sometimes.

"Dylan," my dad says, distracting me and Dylan from our staring contest, "Why don't you and Alice get some dinner? Seems like you haven't had a good conversation in a while and I know that you're hungry." Okay, why must my dad try so hard sometimes? Well, food isn't such a bad thing but come on, dinner? At least I'll get some food out of it.

"Go get dressed Ali," Dylan says after an awkward silence, "You have 20 minutes before it turns into a dinner for me and Evan." Evan is his best friend who is pretty nerdy, but hey he's pretty cool. I run up the stairs and decide I need Isobel's help with outfit choice.

"Izzy," I say when she finally picks up, "I'm going to dinner with Dylan. What should I wear? I don't really feel like dressing up too much so keep the options in the casual range." What, it's a dinner with my brother, not a date. Eww that'd be so gross. Who would want to go out with Dylan!?

"Wear your orange polo and purple norts. Comfy and cute!" I knew she would come up with something amazing. After saying thanks, I get dressed. I have to go brush my hair because I've had it in a messy bun for a day so it will be super tangled. Why can't I be blessed with un-tangly hair? Guess nothing can be perfect.

*~2 hours later~*

"That was awesome Dylan," I say once we get in the living room, "I had lots of fun. I really am gonna miss you when you go to college next week." I can't believe he's gonna leave me. It's gonna be really weird with just me and mom and dad. I feel like I've gotten closer to him in the past year.

"I'll miss you too Ali. I'm gonna visit as much as possible." I stare at him, making sure that I'll remember his chubby cheeks and brown eyes. I feel tears coming, but I don't bother trying to stop them.

"Ali," Dylan says while pulling me into a hug, "Please don't cry. Sure it's gonna be weird with me not here but you can call me anytime and I promise that I'll answer as long as I'm not in class." Gosh why does he have to do this right now!? The only thing I can do is hug him back and cry on him.

"Alice," my dad says, "Are you ok? Why are you crying? What happened?" Oh gosh my parents are so annoying.

"She's fine," Dylan says after pulling back, "She's just sad that I'm leaving next week." Ugh now my parents are gonna bug me about being sad.

"Aww it's gonna be okay Ali," my mother says while putting a hand on my back, "He's going to be an hour away so I'm sure he'll come to visit as much as he possibly can." Yeah we already got through that mother. Ugh they are so annoying!

"Guys," Dylan says once I finally stop crying, "She's gonna be fine. Now can we stop this crying fest and watch some Disney or something?" And that's one of the reasons why I love him so much. He knows how Disney can make me feel better no matter what.

"Y'all have fun doing that," my dad says, "I have to head to work." He's always working. Hey at least we're getting good money from it. I'm used to him working by now so it really doesn't bother me anymore.

"So what movie Alice? Your choice?" Dylan says once we get upstairs and go into the bonus room.

"Hmm," I say while looking at the movie shelf, "I love every single one. How about you surprise me?" I've seen every Disney movie about a million times so whatever one he chooses I'll be happy with.

"Close your eyes. Don't you dare peak or you will regret it." Ok yeah I know he'll tickle me and I really don't want that so I'm just gonna close my eyes.

"Ok you can open now." He says after a few seconds of peaceful silence. Of course there has to be a million previews but I enjoy seeing the old previews.

"No freaking way," once I see the title 'Oliver and Company' appear on the screen. This is one of my favorites.

*~1 hour later~*

"That never gets old." Dylan says once the credits start rolling. I feel bad for him because I sang every single song throughout the whole movie. I can't help it I just loving singing too much. That's why people never watch musicals with me because I sing way too much.

Yeah I know this was kinda boring/sad/whatever but it's gonna get better soon I promise. Just wait till summer break is over and school starts. Things will finally get interesting. Kisses to everyone who reads!!
