Gift

My friend gave her heart
To a boy she adored,
But he turned away;
She crumpled to the floor.

Her heart just wasn't
The thing that he desired,
Her gift was unworthy,
Her plan had backfired.

When I contemplate
Offering you my own heart
I recall her tears
When he tore her apart.

I don't think that you
Are as heartless as he,
I wonder if you'd
Accept a gift from me.

I know I'm fragile,
My heart has broken wings,
But if you want it
You can teach it to sing.
