I pulled my 03 Altima into the parking lot of Burns High with a sigh and turn the key to stop my car, and my music. I looked over at Ellie in my passenger seat.

"Ready for this?" She laughed at my question, nodding.

"It's not like we're doing anything exciting today, it's just school. Hey! We have a pep assembly today, it's the 'Sweet Heart Assembly' too! We get to vote cutest couple, play cupid-" I groaned.

"Don't remind me. You and Riley'll probably win cutest couple again, so can I just skip? I have work after school anyways." Ellie puckered up her lips in a pout.

"You can't skip you doof, it'll be fun. Let's just get started with the day. I don't want to hear you complaining all day either." I returned her pout and unlocked the car doors, stepping out into the light drizzle.

I grabbed my bag out of the back seat and looked towards the school building. The exterior had been renovated after Ellie's sister had graduated, seven years ago in June. What once was covered in dying ivy and chipped bricks was now pristine bricking, the high school resembled an old fire house.

"Charming as always." I muttered. Ellie glanced at me and I nodded back. We started the walk across the parking lot, ready to face the post-valentines madness.

The bell rang at 2:30, causing everyone to flood the halls and find a place in the theater. Ellie appeared on the stage as the crowd settled down.

"Hello everyone! Welcome to the 2015 Sweet Heart Assembly!" There was clapping and the rest of the cheer squad filed up on stage to take their places behind El. "We've got an exciting show this year! Let's get started." She smiled brighter than the yellow shirt she was wearing, and handed the microphone to one of the girls behind her.

Polite clapping and laughter filled the auditorium as pairs were called to the stage to fit categories such as 'Mr. and Mrs. Smile' and 'Mr. and Mrs. Creative.'

Everyone cheered as Riley and Ellie were called to the stage for the Cutest Couple award.

"Thank you!" Ellie beamed, "Now I'm excited to announce Cupid's Choice! You all voted, and the couple you want to happen is- drum roll please." The sound of feet hitting the floor filled the room, Ellie opened the envelope she had in her hand.

"Charlotte McDouggal and, wait what?" Her face went bright red, and Riley took the envelope from her hands. He looked at it and laughed.

"Charlotte and Ellie. Come on up." Laughter filled the auditorium. I awkwardly stood up and walked down the side alley to the stage. "Are you trying to steal my girlfriend?" Riley joked as I took my place beside Ellie on stage.

"Maybe she likes me better Riley," I stuck my tongue out at him, and slung my arm over Ellie's shoulders, making her face even more red. "Are you glad I didn't skip now?" I whispered in her ear.

"Well now that that's over.." Riley laughed, "You're dismissed, have a great weekend!"

I parked my car in the back of Phoebe's Diner, and dusted off my shirt before going in the back door.

"Finally Lottie! We're swamped, grab your apron and get up to the counter, pronto!" My boss called from the kitchen.

"On it Alice!" I called back. Grabbing my black apron from the hook by the back door, I maneuvered my way to the front of the small diner. I took my place behind the cash register and surveyed the diner floor.

The 50's themed booths were full of couples, 'tis the season, and the counter had plenty of people waiting to be served. I pulled the small pad and pencil out of my front pocket, and set to work, taking orders and serving food.
