I hold the knife tight to stop my hands from shaking. This will be the moment that will change my life. I look at my father, Marcus. The look he gives me makes it obvious that he's expecting me to go to Abnegation. But I am divergent, which he doesn't know. And since I saw Tobias becoming Dauntless, not caring what our dad would think, I knew I would go there too.
So, I do it. I cut my palm with the knife, and my blood falls in the Dauntless fire. It hurts, but I ignore it. I try not to look at my father, but my eyes just go there without me wanting it. He seems betrayed, disgusted. Probably surprised. I try to tell him I'm sorry but I can't. Because I'm not.
