Bobbie ran up to me in the hallway as I walked to my locker.
"so my friend Clay said I could use his truck cause my moms letting me take my future, would you mind coming?"
he asked,
"yeah I can do that I just need to get my stuff and later I have to go see my mom."
we walked to my locker than walked two blocks to Bobbies friends house to get his truck. After driving for 15 minutes we pull up to a driveway. The house at the top of the driveway was like a little cottage in a subdivision. We get out of the truck and walk up to the door. Bobbie opened the door an we walked in the smell of alcohol filled the room it looked like an abandoned house that teens would come and trash. Beer cans everywhere, spray paint on the walls, dirty dishes everywhere. A woman wearing a Cheetah print robe holding a maybe two year old boy wearing a diaper and in her other hand a beer.
"Chad!"
said Bobbie as he reached his arms out for the baby,
"the agency finally gave him back today"
said his mom handing Bobbie the boy,
"where's Toby"
asked Bobbie
"at the club"
said his mom without a care in the world.
Bobbie put chad on the ground and started walking around the corner, I followed as we walked in a bedroom with just a mattress on the floor, our dresser with the drawers coming out and clothes on the floor. There was a crib in the corner with dirty sheets and blankets on it, magazines all over the floor. Bobbie started backing and taking boxes outside. After we finished packing we put everything in the truck and we left.
"so who's Toby?"
I ask hoping he wouldn't mind,
"well he's Chad's Dad, but he's always banging other girls and chad gets taken away every other month so Toby doesn't really come around when chads home."
he said like he has told this story many times.
After getting everything in the house and set up Bobbie said he could take me to the hospital to visit my mom.
We walk into the hospital, Bobbie goes and sits in the waiting room while I sign in, a nurse takes me to my mom and she's awake.
I sit down in the chair next to her,
"mom?"
i say softly hoping she could hear me
"Kennedy, baby!"
her voice got more excitement in it,
"mom why?"
I wanted her to answer I needed her to answer.
It was quite for a minute,
"Kennedy, life's hard right now"
"Mom! you can't say that!"
I said getting a little louder.
"Anyways mom the reason I'm here I'd to tell you the plan, I got the house covered, I'm getting a job and staying in school, I've got a roommate too."
I continued,
"Kennedy! You're just a child you don't need these responsibilities!"
"Then why'd you do it?"
I said staring her in the eyes,
"what?"
I looked down,
"just think mom! if you were successful and killed yourself I would still be alone with the house and trying to get a job!"
I yelled,
"Kennedy I'm sor-"
I cut her off,
"Mom when you get better, you can come home, to my house!"
I stood up and walked out, finally.
Tears came down my face curling under my chin.
I wiped my tears away and walked over to Bobbie,
"let's go"
I said walking to the elevator.
The ride home was quite, no talking, just music.
I stopped crying as we pulled up to the driveway.
We walked up to the house, unlocked the door and stepped inside, boxes were still everywhere so we decided to unpack.
Hours past and almost finished, the phone started to ring which was the first time it has rung since we moved.
"Hello?"
"hello Mrs. Swan this is Richard, the landlord."
said a deep male voice.
"oh hello is there a problem?"
"just wanted to let you know the rent is due next week,"
"ok thank you I'll be sure to send it soon."
We said our goodbyes and hung up, I remembered the rent was around 1100 dollars a month which was pretty good for the size of this house.
Even though it wasn't much money I knew it was going to be hard to get it, Bobbie and I both don't have jobs yet and not much money now. I went upstairs and looked in my wallet, 62
dollars, a hair tie, frozen yogurt gift card, school ID. I would feel bad asking Bobbie for money already since he just moved in today. I ran down the hall to my mothers room, she owed me anyway. I looked in her dresser, bed side tables and in her purse, I only came up with 265 dollars and 83 cents.
I sat on my moms perfectly made bed hoping to come up with an idea, it hit me! A memory, one that would help right now.
It was around two, three months ago. I was downstairs when I heard scratching on the floors upstairs, I ran upstairs into my moms room to see her laying on the floor putting small boxes under her bed. she laughed and said there was no storage in her room. The boxes didn't seem big enough to carry much storage.I dropped to the floor and looked under the bed, there were two medium sized boxes under the bed. I pulled them both out and opened one. It was full of opened envelopes addressed to my mother from my dad. I went through each one quickly and only read one or two of the letters inside.
"I hope this will be enough to help"
said the first,
"This should last a year or more, treat her right"
said the other.
I put the letters back in the box and opened the other, it was a surprising amount of cash! Lots! I can't believe my mom had all of this tucked away under her bed, who can sleep with this much money under then. I roughly counted 4 grand, I knew I had to be smart with this money and Bobbie can't know
about it. I covered the boxes back up and shoved them under the bed again.
I stood up and looked in the mirror,
Kennedy, you will still get a job, Bobbie will still get a job, you won't use all the money. You can take a little each month, that's it! You will go back downstairs and talk to Bobbie about needing rent.
I put a straight face on and walked downstairs.
"Hey Bobbie,"
I said sitting down next to him on the couch
"Hey what was that call about, everything okay. You ran away."
"well not really, I didn't know but the rent is due next week and I hate to ask since you just moved in but I only have 327 dollars the rent is 1100."
I said as I looked at the ground,"I can probably get a job in the next day or two, but we'll have to work hard, I'd be happy to help"
he said putting his hand on my shoulder.
I told him I would get some money out of my mom and maybe call my dad for help.
We turned the tv on and watched some tv, an hour past
and my eyes were getting heavy, they kept opening and closing until they stayed shut.
I felt an arm flexing on my back and my legs hanging, I knew Bobbie was carrying me. I still had my eyes shut as he walked into my room. I panicked a little, Did I leave my underwear on my floor by my bed? yep. He laied me down on my bed and slid the covers from under my body to on me. I could feel his soft warm hands sliding down my arm as he walked out of my room shutting the door behind him. I quickly opened my eyes and realized I was blushing.
