I woke up half past 6 the next morning, the house smelt of alcohol. "He must be at it again" I thought. My brother became an alcoholic after the accident. I avoid him as best I can, which is easy because all he ever does is sleep the day away and go out partying at night. When something like that happens you become independent and you have to grow up pretty fast because their's nobody else to be grownup for you. So I got dressed, and cleaned the house, and got out as soon as I could. I walked around town until I got to the coffee shop. Charlie was still working his shift so I sat down at the counter waiting for him to notice.
"Hey!" he exclaimed when he saw me. Charlie was my best friend, my only friend. I sat and drank my coffee until Charlie's shift was over then we drove to Charlie's boyfriend Jared's house so they could rehearse. A few years ago they started a band and they rehearsed daily in his garage. They play local gigs and stuff but nothing really big. I spent the rest of the afternoon listening to them play until around 5. Then I walked to the bridge and sat down in my usual spot. I sat alone for a bit until I noticed a figure approaching in the distance. As the shadow came closer it became clear that it was the same guy as the night before. When he reached me he seemed to become a bit wary shooting me a tired smile as he sat down and dangled his legs over the edge.
"Trying to steal my place again are we?" I teased, trying to hide the fact that I was happy to see him. He laughed slightly at that and seemed to perk up a bit. We sat for a while watching the sun go down across the city and when it was just about to disappear the boy whipped out his camera and snapped a picture. Then he looked down at his phone examining his photo and smiling to himself and I couldn't help but smile too.
"What's your name?" he said, taking another shot after the sun had gone down a bit further, the sky lit up a faded pink.
"Troye,"I replied, watching him take a few more shots. I was oddly so comfortable around him already and he hadn't even known my name.
"Troye," he repeated to himself, "I like it, I'm Connor."
"Okay then Connor, I guess I'll see you tomorrow." I grinned, and with that I got up and left. He stared after me in confusion making me giggle a bit to myself. I made my way back to my house, stopping to get out my key and unlock the door. I stepped inside going directly up to my room trying to avoid my brother, who lay passed out on the couch, in fear that I'd wake him up. I miss him a lot.
