A Secret

"Olivia?"

Paige's voice practically squeaked. She was totally shocked when a girly voice suddenly spoke from the backseat. She spun around and found the adorable little girl sitting in the backseat and swinging her legs excitedly.

She looked as cute as a button in her white leggings and red floral shirt, with cute red sandals in her feet and a bunch of strawberry clips on her hair.

"Olivia?", Paige repeated with a look of amazement. "She's the surprise?".

Jordan smirked cheekily and started to drive out of the compound.

"I went to visit her this morning. Miss Keene told me she had a fever and asked if I could take care of her. She didn't want the other kids getting sick so I agreed", Jordan explained.

Paige observed Olivia's solemn composure in the backseat. That was when she noticed how pale she was. Her nose was reddened and her eyes were dark. She instantly felt bad for her.

"So you got me because you're completely clueless when it comes to taking care of a child?"

Jordan lifted his brow in disagreement.

"Just admit it, Jordan. I've got three younger siblings and the maternal instinct. I'm your basically your best option".

Jordan shrugged lightly. "Actually, I could have asked my mum". Paige let out a grunt in frustration. She had to stop herself from flicking him on the head.

They arrived at Jordan's house twenty minutes later. Paige had never been to his home before and she was anxious to get inside. He pulled into a sleek tarred driveway by the side of the property and parked his car right in front of the black gated garage. The driveway wasn't lined by flowers of any kind. However, the grass on the lawn was so green and perfectly trimmed that it looked fake. A dark stony pavement led from the driveway to the front door of the house which appeared to be a big cuboid with a smaller cuboid over it. It was one of those modern houses with lots of big glass windows and no technical design or architecture. Just two boxes. It looked more like an office than a home.

"See the appeal, yet?", Jordan asked Paige teasingly when he noticed her staring. She followed him as he walked into the path with Olivia's hand in his. They looked picture perfect.

The front door was grey just like the rest of the building. Jordan stepped up to the porch and positioned his face in front of the security panel. It scanned his eyes and let out a beep sound. Paige watched in amazement as Jordan typed something in about guests. The door made a pneumatic sound and slid open, allowing them entrance.

The interiors of the house were more chilly than she had precedented. She had dressed for a warm summer day. Now her thin black shirt and black shorts seemed like a really bad idea. Looking around the house, she realised that it looked like the inside of a metal box. All the doors in the house were sliding doors.

Jordan took them to the living room which was sparsely decorated: a long white sofa, a white armchair, a coffee table and a flat screen TV. Jordan helped Olivia unto the couch and put her feet up.

"Are you good?", he asked.

She turned over on her side and put her arms around herself. "It's super cold", she replied with her eyes shut tight.

Jordan sighed and gave her shoulder a pat. "That's the thermostat. I'll get it. Do you need anything else?".

"A blanket?".
