John

"______, that's insane. You can't do that." I frowned deeper, watching her pace my living room. After the incident with Dave, she's been having strange thoughts and saying weird things. Weirder then usual, I mean.

"Let's run away, John." she'd say. I'd stare at her and shake my head, and when I asked her why, her answer was to "get away".

"Why not?" she's saying now. Her eyes are looking right through me, and I feel my spine shake and rattle as my skin goes cold.

"Because," I insisted, "Dave will be put in jail."

"Serves him right!"

"/_____/."

"John, he KIDNAPPED you. You could've gotten hurt, or doused with lollipop sugar!" she hissed. I perked an eyebrow but quickly tried to shake it off.

"He wouldn't, _____. Dave's been my best friend for as long as I can remember." I said, my voice soft as to not spark any yelling. She looked back at me with an expression that was half-obvious-looking, half-confused. I couldn't help but giggle at her wide eyes.

"Don't you get it, John?" she asked, her expression drooping as she took my warm hand with hers. "Dave's got a crush on you!"

"I don't think so." I said immediately. She dropped my hand and swung around, playing with her hair and grumbling. "Hey," I took her hand and pulled her back to me. "Even if Dave is jealous, we can't just run away. He's not dangerous."

She didn't look satisfied with my answer. "He can be! I've seen him fight, John, and I've been his victim before.-"

"That was an accident." I interrupted. She ignored me.

"-Dave could have killed Karkat! He's possessive, John, and he's got a crush on you."

"No. He doesn't." I shook my head. "Dave knows I'm not a homosexual."

"Oh my God." She looked away again and broke free from my grasp. Soon, my dad entered the room, laying an array of cakes and strawberries on the coffee table. _____ glanced towards the horizon, as if waiting to teleport across the city.

"I need to get home." _____ popped a fresh strawberry into her mouth and I watched her swallow it. She didn't look too good. Her hair was a mess, and her face was tinted green. She looked tired and drained.

"I'll walk you." I said after studying her. She nodded and I yelled to my dad that I'd be right back.

When we got to _____'s apartment building, I looked across the hall at Dave's door. I had been in his apartment before, but it always freaked me out. Weird puppets and fake swords everywhere... I shrugged it off and focused on _____. She unlocked her apartment and walked in. Her mom rushed to greet us.

"_____! John!" she hugged _____ tightly. "Your dad told me you were going to stay there for another night..." she looked back at _____ and noticed how tired she was. Her expression changed. "Come on in, I'll get you some water." and she hurried off before I got the chance to say "hello".

I lead _____ to the couch and sat down next to her. She leaned on me and I wrapped my arm around her shoulder as gently as possible.

"I have a headache..." she whined. I hushed her.

"Then take a nap, silly." I encouraged. She gave me another small nod and closed her eyes.

"John..." she said after a few moments. "You know I have a crush on you, right?"

"W-What?"

"Mhmm... I love you, John." she yawned and curled up beside me.

I didn't know what to say. I didn't know what to do. No one's ever had a crush on me before, and now I find out that two people are in love with me. My brain went numb and I couldn't move, until _____'s mom entered again, placing waters on the coffee table. I thanked her quietly and took a quick sip from my water. I looked down at _____ and sighed.

"Sorry I keep destroying things, _____." I whispered once her mom had gone. "I'll fix it, I promise."

You

You woke up slowly to the sound of the oven timer beeping in the kitchen. You looked up, noticing that John wasn't around, and that there was a blanket wrapped around your shoulders. You sat up and your mom brought you a bowl of cereal.

"Where's John?" You asked sheepishly. You coughed into your elbow and sniffled. You felt like shit.

"He left, honey. Said he had to be home because there's school today." Your mom explained. She rushed back into the kitchen and brought you a pancake.

You frowned, scooping some cereal into your mouth. "Guess I'll see him at school, then." You shrugged. Your mom nodded and walked off. You rose to get dressed.

***

When you arrived at school, you didn't see John anywhere. He wasn't by his locker, and he wasn't in the boys bathroom. (Yes, you went in there. You were too worried about John to give a shit. Luckily, it was empty.)

You walked into homeroom and looked at Dave. He was sitting there, playing with his pencil. You shot him a glare, but he didn't look up.

"Pst," you whispered. "Dave... Yo, Strider..."

His shaded eyes trailed to yours. To your surprised, he looked worried, too. "Where's John?" You asked. He shrugged and looked back at his pencil, obviously wishing to avoid the topic. When the bell rang, he rose from his seat and walked out.

You almost forgot this wasn't his homeroom.

Karkat sat down next to you and John's seat remained empty.

"HEY, _____. DAVE TOLD ME WHAT HAPPENED." He greeted. You nodded and stayed silent.

And John  didn't show up for the rest of the day.

Or the next day.

On Wednesday, you almost collapsed in math class and had to go home early, but John was nowhere to be found.

You slept in your room with your anime posters and tried to find his scent in the blanket.
