Perhaps a good way to start is by confessing that parties are not my thing. Small gatherings with four or five people are fine. But huge parties- no way. I hated the whole atmosphere. The loud music and louder people. The idea that the police might show up at any minute. It wasn't exactly my idea of fun.
Yet here I was, at the house of one of those annoying girls people consider to be popular. I don't even know why I was invited. It wasn't like anyone liked me. But apparently everyone was invited, and I fit into that category.
I was surrounded by a wall of noise. Everywhere I turned there were people shouting and chugging from red plastic cups. I didn't mind the alcohol aspect of parties- drinking was easy- but the sound of people chanting and egging their friends on to glug more down hurt my head. Or maybe that was the drink I had in my own hand. It was hard to tell.
I was searching for somewhere to hide out and be alone for a while. Maybe if the girl who's party it was had a cat I could hang out with it, but there was no sign of any feline pet.
I kept tripping over balloons and pizza boxes. There was literally nowhere I could be alone. But then I saw it: my sanctuary.
Her back porch was almost empty, apart from some guy staggering about the garden and a girl vomiting up against the fence. I could deal with them.
I went out and sat on the porch, sipping at my drink. I wasn't even sure what it was, but it looked like piss and tasted disgusting. Oh well- it was wet and I was thirsty.
I was staring to feel nauseous, so I chucked the cup on to the grass, and lay back on the porch. I probably looked insane, but I'd rather that than puke everywhere. The sky was extremely clear. It was like staring up into a starry kaleidoscope- but I assumed the spinning was just because I had drank too much.
