"Hey."

Bree felt her cheeks grow hot at his voice and swallowed quietly before looking up from her biology book at the person standing awkwardly in the doorway.

Her heart painfully missed a beat as his eyes avoided hers.

"Hey," she managed though her mouth suddenly felt ridiculously dry.

"You wanted to talk?" He was still standing in the doorway, as if the floor of her room was a minefield.

She nodded. "Yeah."

He mimicked her nod and pushed his hands into his front pockets with a deep sigh and edged his way into her room. He couldn't count all the times he had entered that room during his lifetime, but suddenly it felt like he had never been there before. Everything was different now.

"I told mom."

Her breathless words made him freeze and his eyes met hers for the first time since he arrived. He stumbled on the words, "You...you told...told her?"

"Could you please close the door?"

His eyes were glued to her hands, white from gripping the edge of her biology book too hard. It took a moment before her words sunk in. In an almost nervous sprint he backtracked and closed the door behind him.

Then silence enveloped them. Jacob had never found it difficult to speak to Brianna. She was one of the few people he could tell everything to. She was his best friend. But last time they've met, they had done things best friends usually don't. Which apparently had robbed him of his ability to speak and behave normally around her.

She glanced up at him, while slowly chewing on her bottom lip.

"Soo..." he whispered and broke the silence with a subsequent harsh nervous cough.

Brianna put the biology book to the side and straightened her back. "Is this how it's going to be from now on?"

Jacob's chest tightened at the annoyed tone in her voice. "What?"

"We can't be in the same room anymore?"

He frowned, growing cold. What was she saying? "Of course we can."

She threw her arms out to the sides and erupted, "So what is this? Huh?"

"Bree..." Jacob mumbled, shifting nervously.

"We had sex, Jake!"

He swallowed. "Yeah."

"'Yeah'? That's all you have to say?"

Her angry energy was starting to dampen his nervousness. "I thought you-"

"I gave you my virginity," Bree interrupted.

"I know, babe."

A painful tear rolled down her cheek as she brokenly whispered, "Then why won't you even look at me?"

He felt out of place. Like it didn't matter what he said; he was going to hurt her either way.

"Because..." the sentence died out on its own.

"Because what?" Bree demanded.

"Because I don't know how to feel about all of this."

Brianna stared at her long-time friend, hurt silently exploding in her large brown eyes. Her hands went around her knees as she slowly pulled her legs up against her chest. "You think it was a mistake."
