Roswell High School
(2003) Max is 18, Liz is 17

"Is that Melissa Moore?" Maria asked as she sat down next to Liz.

Liz took a big bite out of her sandwich and nodded non-committally.

"And you're fine with that?"

Liz narrowed her eyes and looked over at Maria, asking around a mouthful of chicken, "Why wouldn'd I be fine wid dat?"

"Oh, sorry."

Liz put her sandwich down, staring at Maria. "What?"

"I forgot that we are not talking about that."

"Talking about what?"

"Max Evans."

"Why are we not talking about Max Evans?"

"Because every time I mention him you go all funny."

Liz huffed and looked away, her eyes falling upon Max as he was sitting against one of the trees, Melissa next to him. "You're crazy."

"Really? Okay. So tell me about Melissa Moore."

Liz shrugged casually. "She's a skank."

Maria shook her head in amusement. Why was she not surprised with that answer? "Based on what?"

"She's all over him."

"She's just sitting next to him and talking."

"He asked her to the prom."

"Aaah," Maria said, as if it explained everything.

Liz looked at her oddly. "What?"

"That's what's got your panties in a twist."

"Nooo," Liz said slowly. "I'm annoyed because Max is encouraging her advances even though she's obviously a ho."

Maria sighed. "Seriously, Lizzie. You need to get over him."

"When was I ever under him?"

Liz realized what she had said as Maria laughed.

"Yeah, when were you under him? I've always wondered about that."

"Shut up."

"For someone you claim to hate, you sure do waste a lot of energy on keeping track of him and talking about him."

Liz pulled her water bottle out of her bag, rolling her eyes at Maria's statements. Maria did this every second day or so. She would come up with all these weird speculations and accusations about Liz's relationship with Max. Liz found her very odd. But Maria had been Liz's only female friend since fifth grade when Liz had knocked over a girl that had been trying to take Maria's lunch money. So they were gonna stick together for some time to come.

"Fine. You want to know a secret?"

Maria's eyes widened with enthusiasm and conspiracy. "Do I?" and then hurriedly added, "And that's a statement not a question."

"You can't tell anyone, okay?"

Maria nodded enthusiastically. "Promise."

Liz looked at her seriously for a second, hesitating slightly. She didn't want this piece of information to get out, but Maria was her friend. She should be able to talk to her friend about this kind of stuff, right?

"He's homeless."

Maria scrunched her nose in bewilderment. "Huh?"

"Max is homeless."
