Picking up the pieces

Pieces of my heart I worked so hard to patch,

I shook myself out of his grasp

I took a step back, only for him to drop on his knees

And grab me by the waist.

He held me tightly against him,

As if I would vanish into thin air.

He pushed his face into my shirt,

Staining it with tears.

His whimpers turned to sobs,

"Take me back... please, please take me back.

I'm begging you, take me back just one more time."

This is too much, why do you make it so hard for me to leave you?

Slowly, gently, I peeled his arms off me

They fell limply to his sides,

As he trembles, his sobs racking his body.

Kneeling down to his height,

I brush my fingers through his hair,

Trailing down his jaw,

Caressing his face for the last time.
