I watched out the top window upstairs in the front room all night keeping watch.

I let Merle have all the sleep he needed,Ive had plenty of sleep and I knew he needed it.
I hadn't seen anything outside other than a few stray biters walking but they disappeared after awhile.
It wasnt long before the sun began to peek in the distance and I heard racket down stairs.

"Merle are you up?"I ask going down the steps. Entering the kitchen area as he started speaking

"Yep just packing our stuff. We should head out. We need to cover some more ground." He said placing various items into a duffle bag.

" yeah okay. Sounds good" I nodded and went to grab my backpack to help him start packing.

There wasn't much to pack since we were light on supplies. Which made it easier to travel but I know it stressed Merle to not know about our next meal or if we'd have a roof over our heads by nightfall.

" 'right then. We'll keep heading south. That's what Andrea told me." He said as he started down the porch stairs.

"Right behind you" I said throwing my backpack over my shoulders.

I enjoyed being in the wilderness. Rather than trapped in the walls of Woodbury.

I know I was safe there but something always felt wrong. I know everyone thinks the governor is this perfect man but deep down I know there is something wrong with him.
Merle had slipped a few times when he had come home from a days work and vented to me about things that had transpired that day. Or for instance, the day the governor found us, I think even then merle knew something was off about him.

FLASHBACK

The sun was starting to set as Merle was showing me how to building a small fire.

We were camped in a ditch off the side of the road.
It had been a couple of days since we made it out of the city with basically nothing but the clothes on our back. We had ran out of all food in the apartment anyways so it was as good of time as any to leave.

The only weapon we had was a small machete Merle had found in a car trunk along the highway. Luckily he had only used it a few times as we tried our best to avoid as many bitters as possible.

"Not too high, just enough to give us some heat. Don't want to give off much smoke and you want keep the flame light low"He spoke lowly explaining to me how to build a fire while keeping a low profile.

"Okay got it" I said nodding. Taking in every detail he told me. Thankful he was even taking the time to teach me to survive.

We both fell silent as he settled beside me.
I pointing my hands and feet toward the fire, clinging to the warmth it provided.

"We'll find some shelter tomorrow. Hunker down for awhile. If I can find a gun I could do some hunting, get us some squirrels or if we're lucky a deer"

" you can hunt?" I asked kinda not surprised but figured I was up to learning more about this man

"You can't?" He huffed at me

"Huh.. no definitely not... ive never even been outside of Atlanta. Not much hunting needs done when there is a 7/11 around every corner." I joked. Rolling my eyes.

"Hmm well I guess I'll have to teach you that too." He nodded chewing on his nails

"Yeah..Thanks" I said with a smile. No back story there I guess " your bandages probably need changed... if you're not careful it could get infected" I said as I grabbed my backpack pulling out some new gauze.
He nodded as he watched me work on unwrapping and re wrapping his stump wincing here and there.
