“Peter told me to wake you up, it’s ten in the morning and he says you have to get up even if you don’t want to.”  A little voice says.  My eyes focus and I see that it is Mary, the youngest of the children.  I smile and start to get up.

“Did you open the gift I gave you yet?”  She asks and looks expectantly at me.

“No.”  I say and stoop to pick her up.  “Will you show me which one is from you so I can open it right now?”  I ask and take her over to the dresser.

She points to a colorfully wrapped item and I pick it up.  Setting her on the bed I sit next to her and open it.  It is a purple piece of lavender soap that smells amazingly strong.  I hug her and put the soap on my towel for use when I take my next shower.

“Thank you, Mary that is a wonderful smelling soap piece I will use it the next time I take a shower.  But why did everyone give me a present?  Is it a special occasion?”  I ask and get a change of clothes for the day.

“Well back in Mommy and Daddy’s home world, when a boy becomes a man, the boy leaves home on a trip much like yours and survives for a few weeks before coming home and then he is seen as a man in everyone’s eyes.  And if he doesn’t go on the trip or comes home early, he is not seen as a man and has to try again.  He can’t get married until he does this either, because he is still a boy in the family and the villagers’ eyes.  The presents are because you would now be a man and they give presents to a boy when he becomes a man.”  She explains as I change into a fresh set of leather pants, wrap my chest, so that it’s flat, put a cotton shirt on and change into a pair of socks, putting on my boots I grab Mary and give her a piggy back to the kitchen.

Breakfast smells come invade all thoughts and I let Mary down and sit at my place at the table.

“Good Morning, right on time for breakfast, I was opting for a longer sleep but Peter says there isn’t time to sleep the day away.”  Peggy says and puts the breakfast pans on the table.  “Mary, go ring the bell for breakfast please.”  Peggy says and sits at her place, after Mary leaves she turns to me.  “Ishmael is a good boy, he is just strong willed and not too good on hints, keep up the Enoch escapade and eventually he will stop.”  Peggy says and smiles at me.

Talking stops our conversation and the rest of the family comes in.  Everyone sits at their usual places and luckily any change would be very strange.  Even though Ishmael is across from me Enoch is right next to me and he pecks my forehead before sitting down.  Ishmael gets angry at that but says nothing and sits in his seat.  Suddenly I realize he thinks Enoch is his competition, and he plans to beat it.

“Good morning Leah.”  Mathew says as he sits down.  “Sleep well?”  He asks as we all settle in.

“Yes I slept well thank you.” I say and put my napkin on my lap.

Breakfast goes by fast and it is very good.  Eggs, sausage, potatoes, rolls, and homemade ketchup and jam.  The meal is washed down with fresh milk or water, whichever we prefer and after the meal we sit and talk before going on with our chores.  Slowly we all leave the kitchen after helping a little with the clean-up.

“Leah, we have horses to ride.”  Enoch says as he comes up behind me.  Ishmael is watching and listening, I ignore him and act as though he were invisible.

“Let me change and I will be right out.”  I say and head to my room.  Enoch leaves ahead of me and I lock my door before finding an older pair of pants and an older long sleeved shirt.  Putting on my belt and knife I sit on my bed and pull my boots on.  I tuck my pants into my boots and head out.  Ishmael is waiting for me at my door.
