Dinner that night turned into a noisy but fun story telling time. The real Steven, when not controlled by a demon lady weaves a story so well that it’s almost like you’re there, with the people. After dinner the dishes fall to Enoch and my chore, Peter and Steven have to go to bed early. Enoch and I walk to the lake laughing over a few jokes that Steven tells in our parting.
“He is actually not that bad once you get to know him.” Enoch says as we walk to the lake.
"Yeah he’s pretty cool, but man, sometimes he can get on my nerves.” I say.
We approach that lake and then squat to clean the dishes off. Halfway through the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I hear a snarling behind me. I turn slightly to see three wolves croutching thirty odd feet behind us.
“Enoch,” I whisper. “Do exactly what I say, no questions asked.” I say
“What is it?” He whispers back
I grip his arm and then I start slowly walking into the lake.
“Follow me and don’t look behind you.” I say.
He follows me and we wade deeper out. After a little while we are swimming and then I turn around, the wolves are pacing at the lakes edge, waiting for us to come back.
“Did you meet some new friends Leah?” Enoch asks as we tread water.
“Well not exactly, I stole something from them though, or maybe I broke into their house.” I say sarcastically as we watch the wolves pace.
“Maybe you should stop doing that, you’re going to get us in trouble.” He says sarcastically. “Any ideas of what to do”
“Maybe we could swim to the other side if the lake and try to get up a tree or something.” I say as my teeth start to chatter.
“Never make it. The wolves would catch us before our second step to the trees”
“Scream for Peter?”
“Too far and he might not bring a weapon.”
“You could put a spell over them.”
“Can’t, never learned how, I can only do it to humans.”
“Sit here until they get tired and run away to look for easier prey.”
“I think they might be more patient than us and we are going to catch pneumonia.”
“Is Peter telepathic?”
“His range is considerably smaller here than in Huarenaum.”
“Think Steven will come looking for us?”
“Not after you threatening him like that.”
“Dive down and stay under as long as we can and hope they think we disappeared.”
“The best idea yet; on three, one…two…three.”
I take a deep breath and as we dive we grab each other’s hand, not wanting to be separated by the blackness of the water. We dive as deep as we can and then try to stay under. After a little while I start to panic and try to surface fast but Enoch’s grip in me slows me down and I realize I have more air. I stay under and then we dive deeper, my ears pop and then we slowly start to return to the surface. As we break the surface of the water I breathe in the cold night air and scan the shore line for the wolves.
“I don’t see them.” I whisper to Enoch.
“That doesn’t mean they aren’t out there.” He says and lets go of my hand, reaching down he gets something and then takes his arm out of the water and throws something towards shore. It splashes in the shallows and the three wolves come charging snarling out of the woods and into the shallows before they realize it wasn’t us.
