I stand up. Cassie's breathing fine, which is a good thing. She's still alive, just unconscious. I try to recall anything my dad had said about respiratory conditions.
My mind goes blank. If I can't remember his face, then how would I remember his words? Everything that he did is now just a blur in my mind.
I think back to the third wave. I shudder. I try to push the memory away, but it just comes back. My dad's face, as he was swept away. A look of pure terror. And what did I do? Nothing.
I stood there blankly. I was froze. I could've tried to help my father, but instead I stood there. I chose to do nothing.
I trudge to the rubble, desperate to find something, anything, that could possibly help Cassie.
"Cassie is unconscious and you are just going to kick over a few pieces of rubble. She needs help, and we need to help her!" I hear Evan yell.
I turn around. I stomp over to him until I am no more than three inches away from him. I feel dominant, having a few more inches in height than he does.
"You know, I could find something that could help her if you wouldn't---"
He's the one to throw the first punch. Straight to my jaw. A searing pains rattles my entire body. I had a bad feeling about Evan. After all, he is one of...them.
I stumble to the ground, and push myself back up. I can't lose, not to one of them. I throw a punch to his eye.
For my mother.
I circle my leg, kicking him to the dirt.
For my father.
I raise my leg higher. I let out a breath, and push my leg down, straight into his stomach.
For Cassie.
