I smile. This girl is so sweet.
"What's your name?" I ask, while she follows us deeper into the oak forest.
"I'm Blossom." she says proudly and smiles.
"Well Blossom," I say "You're safe with us. Right Sammy?"
"Yeah!" Sammy says, louder than I expected.
The little girl has stopped crying entirely. There is only a blur of redness from when she cried, but that's all. Now I can see her features more clearly. She has a dainty face, with freckles sprinkled over her nose. Her eyes are wide, and she has a scar across her right eye. I wonder what it came from.
I imagine her and her family making friends with one. The creatures. They trusted the creature. but then it turned on them. I see it pulling a knife from its pocket and killing her mother, then her father. Did she have a family? I see the creature moving towards Blossom, like in slow motion. I see it scratching her eye with the tip of the blade, but then being pushed over. By another boy, maybe her brother.
Of course, that would never happen though.
Would it?
We walk in silence, our footsteps being the only sound hanging in the air. We continue walking further into the forest. Are we near the end?
I feel a tugging in my stomach, hunger threatening to take over. I have no doubt that Sammy and Blossom are hungry too.
"Are you guys hungry?" I ask.
I realize that I did not bring anything but my knife.
Sammy and Blossom nod in unison, in response to my question. I start to feel hopeless. The forest feels like an ongoing trail. I feel like we have been traveling for eternity, and my leg muscles burn with soreness.
As if reading my mind, Sammy asks;
"Can we take a rest please?"
"Of course. Let's go over by those flowers over there." I say.
I can't forget that if I give up hope, the littles will too. They trudge over to the small flower patch and sit down with their legs crossed.
This may be the sixth wave, but we will not give up. We are the new generation.
