Chapter 9 - A QUESTION

June 4, 1499.

“Do you…love me?” Zenzu asked.

Instantly, Alaya pulled back her fingers. She looked away and said, “No.”

Was that I lie? No, it was the truth! Really? Zenzu’s mind became confused. The way she gazed at him looked completely genuine. Or maybe it was just a way of saying ‘thank you’ without actually saying it.

Zenzu stood up and pulled back his wet hair. “This isn’t working! You’re not trying to make our marriage easy!”

Alaya suddenly stared at him with fierce eyes. “I never intended to marry you! It was a mistake! An accident!”

“If that’s the way you think about this, then fine!”

Why am I suddenly taking this marriage thing seriously? Bright light emanated from Zenzu’s skin. From brown, he became fair, and then completely white. A screeching noise started ringing in his ears.

There was a brief flash of light and a wave of sound. Alaya shut her eyes, stung by the brightness. It took a while before her vision returned to normal.

“Zenzu?”

Her call would never be answered. Where Zenzu once stood now remained two boot prints on the dry soil.

June 3, 2011

“THIS SUCKS!” A powerful headache overpowered Zenzu. He balanced himself on the concrete, waiting until his vision stabilized.

“That was one jolly of a ride!” the janitor’s voice said in front of him.

Zenzu massaged his head. After that, he faced the janitor with angry eyes before asking, “First of all, can’t you get rid of that nasty headache that comes after you whizz through time? You didn’t appear to me in nearly a day! And when I was about to discover what she really felt, you suddenly decided to take me some place else!”

Faint sobs made Zenzu look over the janitor’s shoulder. Alone in the night was a crying girl with long hair, a round adorable face and a brown overcoat. “Mia?”

Mia looked up. Her day had gone from bad to worse. Earlier, she realized Zenzu didn’t love him back. Ron tried to comfort him, but he was leaving for the train station. The girl had nothing to do but to watch the only person who would listen to her disappear over the hill.

She was oblivious to the janitor standing between her and the guy he had just kissed. Her face was stricken in shock and frustration.

“H-how’d you get there!?” she asked with her high-pitched voice. Then, it mellowed down. “Oh, right. You’re just inside my head.”

“No, I’m real!” Zenzu poked her left cheek. “See? It’s really hard to explain, but it has something to do with the janitor in my head.”

That only confused Mia even more.

He tried to explain it again. “Look, I don’t know why, but ever since I grabbed the Bo-shuriken blade hiding somewhere in the main hall’s basement, I’ve been whizzing through time and space!”

 Mia’s eyes widened. “B-but there isn’t a basement!”

Zenzu’s eyes widened. “What?” He then glared at the janitor in front of him. Whistling wasn’t going to get the blue-eyed man in his head out of trouble.
