"One strawberry cake with vanilla icing, coming right up." After taking the money, my trusty coworker makes her way to the back to the kitchen with the ticket clutched in her small hands.
"(Y/n), WAKE UP!" She shouts, kicking the stool which I am perched upon sending me sprawled on the floor.
"YAH, THAT HURT!" I yell slowly standing up and rubbing my side from where I fell.
"Well maybe if you weren't daydreaming you might have heard me call for you...I don't know...TWENTY TIMES?!?!" She yells back making dramatic movements with her hands.
"Oh." I stop, dropping my gaze to my shoes. "Sorry..."
She also stops, her eyes softening and the angered expression splashed across her face quickly depleting.
"It's okay, I know you have been stressing over school and stuff, I should have been/be more considerate of you." She quietly says, and as I peer up at her through my hair I see a reprimanding look on her face as she mentally kicks herself.
"No, no, wait that's not what I meant! I-" But before I can even mutter another word in protest, she already stopped me with her hand.
"Shhhh... Hush now... 'Cause honestly I don't care what you say, I have made up my mind."
"But-" I go to interrupt her yet again, but the sudden glare she sends my way stops me yet again.
"...As I was saying," She pauses as if expecting yet another sudden verbal burst by me, "It's late, we aren't busy at all...so you man the cash register and I will clean up the kitchen, and then we can close up."
"You don't have to do that, I am perfectly capable of scrubbing up the back and waiting for another hour until we close." I protest yet once again.
"Nuh huh uh," She says, " I am the manager and what I say, goes, don't worry I'll talk with my cousin who owns the bakery and make sure us leaving early isn't docked from your pay, but I will dock pay if you continue arguing with me..."
In return, I glare at her, but make a zipping motion over my lips with my hand and move my personal belongs up to the front of the store. Ladies and gentlemen, this is exactly why you don't work with your best friend and them be your boss... you can't fight them.
As I make my way towards the front counter I see a young man patiently waiting there.
"Uh, did you need something?"
"No, thankeu..." He says looking over my shirt for a name tag.
"(Y/n)." I say quietly.
"My name is (y/n)." I finally state looking him squarely in the face.
And with that, I nod, and bury myself deep in a book.
"Y/N, I need your help, please!" I hear a voice call from the back, roughly ten minutes later.
"Ah, coming!" I yell back in reply, nodding an acknowledgment to the man before scuttling off to rescue.
"Y/n, thank goodness, I need you to give this to the handsome gentleman at the counter." My friend breathes.
"...why?"
"What do you mean, why?!" She looks at me like I suddenly lost my mind, "He ordered something and I need you to hand him the order."
I suddenly squint my eyes in an accusing way, giving her a fixed gaze,"So that's why you volunteered to clean the backup!"
"You are trying to play matchmaker again!" I accuse, my eyes piercing into her slightly guilty expression.
"Not true, I had completely forgotten about him when I purposed to clean up the back!" She defended, "You looked so weary and tired I just had to help out, besides it's not that hard to give someone a cake."
"Then why don't you hand him the cake, if it's 'not that hard'?" I question, not easily letting her off the hook.
"Because I said for you too!" She exclaims shoving the cake in my hands before pushing me past the kitchen's double doors and promptly locking them before I can march back through them.
"Aish," I mutter, hitting the door with my head in frustration, before once again making my way towards the counter.
"I have a Strawberry Cake with Vanilla Icing, " I read off the tag to the man in front of me, "That's what you ordered, yes?"
"Yeseu, may I now takeu?" He asks expectantly holding out this hands to take the cake.
"Ahhhh, yes...you may now...take the cake..." I respond slightly befuddled by the way he worded his question.
"Thank you, you make my hearteu... very happy." He says with a wide enough smile to blind me for all eternity.
"Ahhh, yeah, your welcome I guess..." And with that the strange man disappears out the door.
"Sooooo... Did my plan work?"A sudden voice questions, and I turn to see my coworker grinning mischievously.
"Of being on the next missing persons list? Then yeah." I answer then begin to chase her around the small bakery.
