Sunday passed by, and Ash didn't come by, it's fine, right? He has his own life. Yet I couldn't help but wonder. I mean, it wasn't like I had asked to hang out, no, it had been his idea! I caught up on my schoolwork and studies anyways, preparing myself for the long day tomorrow. I sat at my desk, my black hair constantly in my face, annoying me. I was finishing up my math equations when the phone with rang.
*Bring* *Bring*
I got up from my desk and raced downstairs to the phone, me not yet having a phone of my own, and picked up. Katie's flustered voice answered on the other line. "Lil-l-Lily!" She sounded close to tears, and I instantly panicked, yet remained calm through the line. "What happened?" I demanded softly, yet firmly. "It's Tiffany, her parents are getting a divorce. She phoned me asked me to come over, yet she was hysterical. I don't know what to do - I've never seen her cry before! I'm not good at handling sad people, you know that."
"Katie you comfort me when I cry, she is no different. Maybe a bit more fragile right now - this isn't some stupid boy who we'll forget his name - no, this is her parents - the people she's know all her life, and we need to be there for her. I'll be there right away." I hung up, grabbed my jacket, put mom's cellphone in my pocket - she insists I bring it with me when I go out, so she can call me from the home phone, it's her old one yet I still can't have it because I'll 'waste the data.' - I also scribbled mom a note so that when she got back from the Hospital she'd see it.
It would be 6 O'clock soon, it was a crisp fall day, and I broke into a run. Knowing Katie she'll call the other girls too.
I turned down the familiar corner, stoping and the cute house with the red roof. I rang the doorbell, and a moment later the door quickly opened to see Katie's anxious face.
"Wait, why are you like - in control of the house? Where are Katie's parents"? I asked, looking around as I stepped inside.
"Apparently Tiffany's mom went to spend the night at her mom's, and Tiffany's dad... Well we don't know, Tiff just said he sort of ran off..." Katie looked as anxious as I felt, he was probably at the local pub, drinking his feelings away. But what I didn't understand is why. Tiffany's parents had been so close, they did fight, but not all the time, and when they did it wasn't usually big.
I took off my coat and gingerly headed into Tiffany's room.
I knocked gently before going in. I felt my heart break at the sight, calm, collected Tiffany was sitting on her bed, teary eyed, her face blotchy, and her bed littered with used Kleenex.
"Oh, Tiff, it'll be okay." I said, rushing towards her and giving her the most heartfelt hug I could.
"Oh, Lily, I told Katie I didn't want any one else seeing me like this. I mean - look at me - I'm a mess!' She declared, staring at the ground, she was usually very positive, but there was a bubble of sadness surrounding her now.
"Don't worry, it's okay..." I repeatedly told her multiple times just to calm her down. Once she was somewhat calm I made a move, not quite sure how she'd react.
"What happened?" I regretted the words as soon as they fell out.
Yet Tiffany didn't se fazed by the words. "My mom and dad just started annoying each other more, you know, small things like leaving the back door open and letting in cold air, but - she sniffled - that quickly turned into a fight, until my mom, she started staying out later at night..."
"You could have told us Tiff, you wouldn't have had to go through this alone." I said giving her a small smile.
"And then... She met another man, and well, she had an affair. My mom had an affair!!!" She burst into another fit of tears, and I hugged her until she stopped crying.
There was a small knock at the door. "Come in." Tiffany said timidly, she didn't like being vulnerable. In walked Melissa, whose face instantly turned to shock at seeing poor Tiffany.
I quietly walked out the door, into the living room. "Jazzy didn't make it?" I asked
.No... Did you get her to relax?" Katie asked hopefully.
"Yeah... Did you know her parent had an affair?" I asked.
Katie put a hand to her mouth, shocked. "No - I didn't. But, but her parents - there wasn't anything wrong between them last time I saw them - and that was only two weeks ago!"
