"Oh shit," Chris whispered breathlessly as he turned and stared running.

"Come back, Chambers!" a voice called sinisterly.

"Screw you, Ace!" Chris yelled. He turned into an alley ahead and didn't stop running until he reached the library. He grinned and ran in, knowing Ace would never look for him in a library.

As he shoved the door open, it slammed into a guy coming out of the library with an armful of books. All of the books fell to the floor, each making a loud thud.

"Watch where you're going, man," the boy said. He was about the same height as Chris and looked to be the same age. Chris had seen him at school before, but never met him. He had shaggy brown hair and brown eyes, and he was lean. Chris thought he looked kinda dorky, but not in a bad way.

"Sorry, man. Here, let me help," Chris said. The other boy looked at him as Chris began picking up the books. He studied his short blondish hair and blue eyes. He noted how his clothes looked old and worn, and he was out of breath. The boy figured it was because he was exercising, as his body seemed fit as if he stayed in shape.

"My name's Chris, by the way," Chris informed him.

"Gordie. Well, Gordon, technically, but everyone calls me Gordie," the boy said.

"Wait, are you Gordie Lachance? Denny's little bro?" Chris asked.

"Yeah," Gordie said, rolling his eyes.

"What?"

"Everyone always talks about Denny and his sports and it gets old," he said flatly.

"Oh. Sorry," Chris apologized. "I know what it's like to be placed with your older brother."

"Who's your brother?"

"Eyeball Chambers."

"Ouch," Gordie said, widening his eyes slightly.

Chris looked out the window of the door to see none other than Ace.

"Ah, man, I gotta get out of here! Ace is gonna skin me!" Chris said.

"What'd you do?" Gordie asked slowly.

"Beats me," Chris said. They both grinned. Gordie ran out the door.

"Gordie, no! What are you doing?"

"Hey, Ace! You lookin' for that Chambers kid?" Gordie asked.

I cannot believe this! He's gonna hand me over to Ace!

"Yeah. You seen him?" Ace growled.

"Yeah."

Ah man, here it comes!

"Where?"

"Up your ass and around the corner," Gordie said, then turned and ran back into the library. Ace stared daggers at him, but left him; he had someone else he was looking for. When Gordie looked for Chris, he found him on the ground laughing like crazy, his face bright red.

"Oh, man, that was boss," he managed to get out between laughs. When he finally gained control of hisself, he threw his arm around Gordie.

"I think we're gonna get along just fine," Chris said, grinning. Gordie smiled back.

They walked out of the library together and agreed to meet up with each other at school the next day.
